Expertise for diplomacy

Help ensure UK diplomats have the best possible information and advice on modern Africa.

We are the Africa Research Group, part of the Foreign and Commonwealth’s Research Analyst cadre of subject matter experts. Our role is to provide historical context, institutional memory, advice and challenge to all staff in the FCO’s Africa Directorate, including senior policy makers. It is a particularly exciting time to join as the FCO develops its new strategic approach to Africa.

We are looking for two experts on Francophone Africa: one on the countries of the Sahel, the other on the countries of central Africa. Joining us as a Principal Research Analyst, you will be a recognised authority on your patch. You’ll cover a wide range of themes, including politics, democratic processes, peace-keeping, conflict, economics and demography. Working with people at all levels, from desk officers to Ministers, you’ll play an integral role in policy-making as you provide policy advice, expert input and detailed research to meet specific policy needs. Your work will be varied as you research past precedents, provide comparative lessons or apply your expert knowledge, but you’ll consistently produce in-depth research and analysis to a tight deadline.

The Principal Research Analyst package is £52,044 depending on skills and experience. These roles are at D6 grade and are offered as permanent posts

What we are looking for

You will be a British citizen, resident in the UK for at least two of the last ten years. You will have a PhD or Masters in a topic related to the role, along with at least five years’ professional experience in a relevant field in academia, an NGO, or the private sector. You will be a competent French reader and speaker. You will be prepared to undergo security clearance vetting to a high level.
