Lead Software Engineers

Manchester Victoria

Recruitment marketing is a minefield of poorly written copy and irrelevant content, with the main culprit being job ads!

Whether its copy and pasted job descriptions or ads struggling to tell the difference between Java and JavaScript, they all seemingly fail to do one key thing… actually tell the reader (i.e. you!) what the role consists of!

So with that in mind, I have put together a short and snappy ad that hopefully sheds some light on the finer points of this role.

We'll begin by talking about the company, a Global Organisation in the Banking and Financial Services space. They are a huge company, spanning multiple countries and with an excellent reputation for their customer-centric approach. They have recently opened a new office in the Manchester area and this hire is a key strategic move for them as they look to flesh out their teams.

The role will focus on a mix between hands on programming/architecture and leadership, coming in as a Lead Software Engineer and acting as a 'technical escalation point' within the team. Your role will be crucial in that you will act as a key figurehead within the tech function, bringing IT and the wider business together whilst at the same time developing some pretty awesome software.

Speaking of the software, the good news is that this role sits within a huge greenfield development piece and you won't be expected to just maintain legacy code. You will instead be knee deep in product-focused development, experimenting with a diverse set of technologies (Java 8, Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, AWS, Hibernate, REST) whilst at the same time ensuring a 'quality first' approach adhering to engineering standards.

In terms of some of the finer points, you should ideally bring the following skills to the table:

Technical Background - a diverse technical background is preferred due to the hybrid nature of their technical stack. Whilst the core focus is Java (Java 7/8, Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Hibernate, J2EE), there will also be a wider focus on front end technologies such as React and Angular, as well as cloud-based development with AWS. Long story short… they want a technologist, somebody passionate about R&D and always keen to work with emerging technology.

Stakeholder Management - whilst not a consultancy role, a huge part of your role will involve working with both technical and non-technical stakeholders due to both the size and structure of the business. It is crucial that you are able to work with a range of people including Project Managers, Development Managers, Architects, Business Analysts, Product Owners and Software Engineers, with strong communication skills being an absolute must!

Development Processes - admittedly this organisation is Agile with a small 'a' rather than a capital 'A' but Agile is a huge focus for them as they continue along their journey. You should therefore have a strong background in Agile (Scrum) methodologies, with wider exposure to TDD, DevOps and CI being an additional benefit.

Leadership - finally, despite this not being a Manager role, you will be expected to act as a technical leader within the team with the option to progress to Engineering Manager in the future. You should therefore have experience taking the lead on key projects as well as a proven track record either mentoring or coaching Junior or Graduate Engineers.
