Coxswain - Wick

Wick, Caithness

£30,671 Plus Benefits

Our client is the charity that saves lives at sea.

If you pride yourself on your management capabilities, strength of character and personality as well as your impressive boat-handling skills, there is a unique opportunity at Wick Lifeboat Station for you.

The majority of your time will be divided between ensuring the lifeboat and equipment work to the highest order and training the crew. Inspiring their progress, you’ll take them on seagoing exercises, identify ways they can improve and impart your valuable knowledge - so that when an emergency shout does occur, you, your crew and your lifeboat will be absolutely prepared. As there is always a high degree of interest from the public, you’ll have the opportunity to meet them and talk about your work.

Ashore you will lead the operational management of the station and provide regular assurance on compliance and activities to the Lifeboat Management Group and area management teams. You’ll need to demonstrate excellent leadership and management qualities with exceptional communication and relationship management skills and have the ability to motivate and maximise people’s potential.

As our client works towards its aims of reducing preventable loss of life, you will take the lead on proactive education and safety programmes, working collaboratively with internal partners and wider external organisations.

To be considered as a Coxswain, you will need:

- Extensive maritime experience and the ability to command lead a crew and safely operate/handle vessels up to 20 metres in length

- Knowledge of SAR operations.

- Experience of maintaining and operating high speed marine diesel engines and their ancillary systems

- An RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (Power) or equivalent (Commercially endorsed). Marine/Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship or equivalent to NVQ Level 3.

An RNLI COBT for ALB Coxswain and Command of the lifeboat operational pass out / RNLI COBT for ALB mechanic and command of machinery operational pass out (or ability to work towards) would be beneficial to your application.

Computer literacy including a basic understanding and knowledge of Microsoft systems and associated software, such as Outlook and the ability to use internal systems for parts ordering and updating records electronically, would also be an advantage.

As this is a seagoing appointment, you will be required to be on call 24 hours per day, weekdays and weekends. Weekend and annual leave will need to be pre-planned with your deputies. In order to meet callout response criteria, this appointment is subject to satisfying medical and eyesight requirements, and has associated conditions of service.

Candidates must be located within close proximity of the station in order to fulfill on-call responsibilities, or be willing to relocate.

The closing date for this role is the 25th November 2018. Interviews are scheduled for the 10th December 2018.

Our client’s staff and volunteers have been saving lives at sea without prejudice for nearly 200 years. They respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within their teams, and consider it essential to help them deliver a world-class lifesaving service. They are an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, they also look for applicants who share their commitment to living their values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping them work towards their goals of halving drowning in the UK and Ireland by 2024. This involves a growing commitment to preventative action, using expertise to work in partnership with communities locally, nationally and internationally to prevent drowning.
