Enigma People Solutions is recruiting for an Optical Engineer. This role offers the chance to be part of a dynamic and diverse Design team working at the forefront of Time of Flight ranging solutions.

The Optical Design Engineer role primarily involves the design of the components of an optical module product, including VCSEL beam shaping optics and objective lenses for use in ToF systems operating in the near infra-red or visible wavelength range. It will require highly skilled and proficient use of simulation tools such as LightTools, CodeV and Zemax to establish design performance, sensitivity to manufacturing variations, and provide yield estimations. The role offers an opportunity to assist in the development of optic design methodology, and the development and of custom design and simulation tools for both refractive and diffractive lenses.

The Optical Design team work closely with the system engineers to establish the performance of the module products. They support mechanical design engineers in tolerance, finite element and thermal analysis, and optimise the lens designs to accommodate and ease the assembly or module integration. The team take a leading role in assisting the Technical Sourcing team in the selection of opto-mechanical manufacturing partners, evaluating their technology and determining their process capability for manufacturing and its suitability for lens designs. The team are responsible to perform verification of lens designs and drive manufacturing optimisation and yield improvement with 3rd party manufacturers.

As part of the Module R&D team the Optical Design Engineer will collaborate with engineers across multi-disciplinary teams from silicon architecture, sensor design, systems engineering and applications to ensure appropriate system-level approach to ToF module design. They will support the product level laser safety certification.

The Optical Design Engineer will assist marketing and customers in the definition of new products by driving feasibility studies, and providing estimation of future product performance.

Key Skills and Experience

LightTools and Zemax for illumination system lens design, tolerance analysis and yield estimation

Experienced in first order ray tracing calculations

Familiar with the design of optics to perform illumination diffusing and flattening operations, including micro lens arrays, free form optics and diffractive optical elements

Experience of optical design for low-cost high-volume manufacturing using injection moulded polymers or replication techniques

Coordination and technical management of 3rd party lens manufacturers in production.

Track record of modelling optical designs as part of a complete system, utilising their in-depth understanding of physics, radiometry and photonics

An understanding of design and fabrication of thin films for band pass interference filters is desirable
