Product Development Engineer - Bourns Ltd

Location: Bedford (Relocation available)

BASIC PURPOSE:

Plans, coordinates, conducts and supervises assignments relating to the development of products, processes or systems for improved performance, quality, reliability and profitability. Develops major new product and process introduction with high complexity. Coordinates with Design, process and manufacturing engineering and responsible for all aspects of the new product development process from customer interface to production implementation. Provides engineering support for existing worldwide high volume product lines, including worldwide Field Applications Engineering.

DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Leads new product development teams from product definition through high volume production implementation in accordance with Corporate Procedures. Interfaces with customers and suppliers to ensure the success of new programs.

2. Leads project teams engaged in assignments in the fields of research, design, development, testing, investigations or analysis of materials, parts, or products, processes, tooling and equipment/automation.

3. Utilises project management tools to prepare product from initial concept through to implementation in a timely cost effective manner.

4. Personally performs complex and novel work assignments pertaining to device modeling development, and qualification of complex technology and products.

5. Prepares proposals (IAR) as required to support new product development programs.

6. Completes engineering documentation package including product data sheets, to support successful new product launch or product/process implementation per ISO 9001 standard or better.

7. Performs and develops product characterisation, test and failure analysis techniques supporting product development, enhancement, reliability and customer applications.

8. Applies knowledge and experience of SPC, DOE, DFM, FMEA, six-sigma process in all products and processes.

9. Advises on new ideas, robust design/processes

10. Provides engineering support for sustaining existing semiconductor products, and ensuring that new products may be converted from development to production status.

11. Responsible for engineering the transfer of newly developed products into production.

12. Provides technical training to new engineering or plant personnel and consultations to other departments, companies and business units

13. Ensures the early participation of process and manufacturing engineering, purchasing and other functions in the development process.

14. Solves chronic problems (quality, performance and cost) related to products and processes using new materials, technologies, design, SPC, DOE or other techniques.

15. Informed on trends and developments in the electronics and surge protection industry through trade publications, trade shows, seminars or outside studies; performs other related duties as required.

Provides direction to technical engineering professionals and clerical support personnel. Directs project(s), program(s) and/or engineering team(s).

COMMUNICATIONS:

Excellent verbal skills required to communicate instructions and present ideas, concepts, and solutions to all levels of employees, suppliers, and customers, worldwide.

SCHEDULING AND PLANNING:

Plans, schedules and directs all assigned project activities. Involved in short and long-range planning activities.

BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: University degree educated in Engineering or Science, or equivalent education, training and experience.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Demonstrated ability to perform the above functions, combined with progressive Engineering experience and proven capability to design, develop and release products, processes or equipment of major scope and complexity.

SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE: Knowledge of surge protection technology with emphasis on semi-conductor protection components. Engineering background in surge protective devices and a basic understanding of general application circuits that require protection. Knowledge of electrical measurement techniques used in the circuit protection industry. Experience working in circuit protection device characterization, test, reliability and failure analysis. Detailed knowledge of regulatory requirements and standards covering voltage and over current protection. (Or similar experience in power electronic components)
