Nationwide’s Technology Development Programme (TDP)

What is the TDP?

Our Technology Development Programme (TDP) is a 18 month, specialist IT training course that’s also a full-time job within Nationwide’s Operations & Delivery Community. This unique, hands-on learning and development opportunity is designed to equip you with the skills, experience, qualifications and technical knowledge that will help you launch a successful and rewarding career in IT.

What benefits are available?

You’ll start on £28K (+ bonus) with access to £3000 for relocation costs, clear pathways to promotion, a personal career mentor, healthcare benefits, a pension scheme and the chance to take up to 34 days’ holiday every year.

Why should I choose the Technology Development Programme?

There are lots of reasons to choose the TDP, but perhaps the most compelling is the peace of mind and balance it gives you; you’re learning and developing, while having the backing of a secure, well-paid job. It’s not untypical to view traditional grad schemes as risky, or to feel torn between taking the leap into employment and continuing your personal and professional development. On the TDP you can do both, alongside like-minded people from diverse backgrounds, and within your own teams through the relationships you build with work colleagues in your specialist areas.

Who can join?

We welcome applications from graduates young and old, non-grads, career changers, frustrated techies stuck in the wrong job, apprentices and even part time candidates. We think this mix helps create a richer environment, where new ideas can take interesting turns - and we find it adds spice socially, too.

Because your 18 month contract will be open ended, it’s in our interests to make sure you’re progressing well, and always well prepped for that next opportunity, or that next step up the career ladder. To date, over 90% of our intake have gone on to bigger and better things within Nationwide.

Why Nationwide?

It’s true that we’re the world’s largest building society.

The same values we champion to our members, we put into action at work. We mirror them in our interactions, and how we respond to each other day to day. This means we’re open, honest and continually building trust with each other in precisely the same way we are with our members.

You won’t be micro-managed; you’re in charge of your career development and are encouraged to pursue your interests though work shadowing, or attending third party events and activities such as cyber war games, hackathons and IT expos. We provide you with the tools and support to give yourself the best opportunity to succeed, but minus the fuss. There is always someone willing to answer your questions. We’re on the hunt for people unafraid to ask them.

Undoubtedly, our culture is our strength, and our people are highly valued. As well as personal support, we offer flexible working hours, paid volunteer and charity days, and our fitness, wellbeing and health centres have all sorts of clever classes, people and gadgets to look after your mind, body and soul.

We do the right thing for our members with every action we take. It sets us apart from our competitors, and builds relationships that last years. But we need good people to help us continue to innovate and grow; people who share our core beliefs and are willing to display the behaviours, talent and drive that can add to our successes.

How do I join?

Once you’ve told us a bit about who you are, and successfully complete our online test, you’ll more than likely be called to our Assessment Centre. This is your opportunity to show us what you can do, and tell us what fires your enthusiasm for technology

The TDP is based in Swindon, Wiltshire, just an hour on the train from London. If successfully enrolled, we can provide relocation assistance to support a smooth transition.

What will I be doing on the TDP?

You’ll be given a first-hand view on how technical teams work together in a large organisation and:

Develop you professional and personal skills

Gain industry leading Technical qualifications

Learn to think creatively to problem solve

Work with mentors to support you throughout your time on the programme.

There’s lots going on inside and outside the office, on the TDP. We’ve had trips to visit our partner company in India, attended technical colleges and developed several real-world Innovation Projects. This gives our recruits the opportunity to test ideas and develop creative skills in front of our strategic partners - including, recently, Microsoft and Cap Gemini. If we feel your ideas have what it takes, you can test them in our Live Innovation Lab and hopefully see them come to life as Nationwide products, improving the lives of our members and wider society.

You will also:

Develop your knowledge and understanding of working with strategic partners

Take the Myers Briggs Personality Profile - this reviews your individual working style and gives you the best pointers to see how you can help develop strong working relationships

Be mentored by someone who’s already completed the course, so any guidance you’re getting is bang up to date and doubly useful

Take our 100-day review. This is your chance to reflect and look back on your first 100-days in the society, along with your peers

Engage in group workshops including How to Influence others, Mind-set & Attitude Awareness and Understanding our Business

Attend leadership events to explore what makes a high performing team, what type of leader you are and how you can inspire others

Take on real-world Business Projects, collaborating with other Emerging Talent Development Programmes, including social investment, business challenges and Innovation.

The Technology Development Programme services Nationwide’s IT and Technology areas, which include everything from running our product operations to ensuring all our processes and systems are resilient, as well as working closely with our Transformation Community to bring to life exciting IT innovations.

Day-to-day you could be working in:

Technical Design & Development

Security, including Cyber

Infrastructure Projects,

Supporting Governance,

Treasury Activities

Nationwide’s 24/7 "Lights on" Teams

We'll offer you a first-hand view on how the parts of our business work together, providing great personal development as well as professional qualifications. Or aim is to give you exposure to a breadth of experience early in your career to help you reach your full potential and build your technical experience.

On the job experience - a permanent real role from day one, you grow your technical skills and knowledge within your business area -Professional qualifications - these are specific to your role and business area but some examples of the foundation courses are BCS Systems Design Techniques, CompTIA Network + and Security +

Both in your day role and time on the programme, you are likely to work with one of our strategic partners. Previous intakes of the TDP have worked with, amongst others, IBM, Capgemini and Microsoft

You’ll find yourself in a challenging but supportive environment - through your peers in your intake group and also with buddies and mentors from our Emerging Talent network which drives Nationwide’s activities in all of our development programmes.
