Spring Technology's client, a public sector organisation in Edinburgh, are currently looking to recruit a Senior Monitoring Engineer for an initial 6 month contract on a rate of c.£425-475/day (outside of IR35).

Responsibilities:

* Owner of all things related to platform monitoring - provide deep technical expertise across infrastructure and application spaces

* Determine actions plan around gaps and drive resolution

* Establish standards and working practices so they are both repeatable and optimal

* Define platform roadmap for monitoring & observability

* Stand up dashboards and regular reporting mechanisms

* Provide knowledge and domain expertise to wider IT areas

* Managing platform health, availability, integrity and currency to an acceptable level

* Monitor, manage and where necessary improve performance of monitoring system

* Work with multi-skilled DevOps teams where skills allow and the need arises

* Troubleshoot and resolve any issues relating to the monitoring systems

* Perform planned platform upgrades/patching when the need arises

* Review designs to meet system capacity requirements

* Managing workloads using Kanban techniques and/or other team defined methodologies

* Create and maintain system and network documentation as appropriate (e.g. MS Visio diagrams, system admin docs.

* Attend both team and wider departmental meetings, stand ups, show and tell meetings and town hall meetings

Requirements:

* SME level of knowledge and experience across entire monitoring space

* Past experience delivering transformative improvements across legacy environments, in conjunction with modern container based and cloud hosted environments

* Proven experience defining architectural patterns for monitoring & observability and driving adoption and change

* Experience of working with modern monitoring stacks

* Experience of fine tuning systems to ensure relevant metric capture across environments

* Experience developing centralise filtering and priority based alerting

* Experience of monitoring common Enterprise infrastructure components including DC, Network, OS, Virtual, Application, Middleware, Database spaces

* Expertise with data centre management monitoring

* Expert knowledge of Linux, Solaris, and windows operating systems monitoring

* Good knowledge of Application observability within JAVA / Python stacks

* Expertise knowledge of monitoring approaches across virtualised environments across multi data centre environments

* Knowledge of security monitoring solutions and integrations

* Strong ability to influence and get buy in across different technical domains / teams

* Strong ownership, ability to work undirected to discover gaps and propose and action improvements in an iterative manner

* Creativity - taking new approaches to tackle problems; embracing innovation and sharing knowledge with, a range of sources and stakeholders

* Knowledge and experience of agile working, including such disciplines as Kanban, feedback, retrospectives.

Desirable Skills:

* Ability to code / script to small/ medium complexity across a number of languages using libraries and web api based methods

* Powershell / PowerCli expertise

* Python or other UNIX based language (BASH, Perl, etc) expertise

* Experience of working in a DevOps environment across multiple agile teams

* Strong proponent of monitoring as code, ability to drive this principle in all activities

* Expertise in CI/CD pipelines and integration with code repositories

* Strong knowledge of APM and observability paradigms

* Strong proponent of automation in design, implementation, and operational management

* Knowledge of Postgres, MongoDB monitoring approaches

* Knowledge of AWS based services
