Senior Insight and Evaluation Manager

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra)

£34,840 (National) £37,610 (London) - £40,200 (National) £43,410 (London)

Two-year fixed term contract

Flexibility with location is available, however, we would expect you to be in the London office at least 3 days a week.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) plays a vital role at the heart of UK life. The wide-ranging work we do includes safeguarding the natural environment, supporting the UK’s world-leading food and farming industries, sustaining a thriving rural economy and leading the engineering of the nation’s defences against natural threats and hazards. Join Defra and you will be part of a department that is responsible for the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe.

Joining our communications team, you will help us understand and interact with our audiences better by leading our monitoring and evaluation capabilities. Project managing various quantitative and qualitative communication research projects, you will:

Contribute to the formulation of effective communication strategies that are based on data analysis and evidence. Using insight tools and techniques, you will gain a level of audience insight that will be vital to influencing campaign activity.

Develop a clear picture of the audiences we are seeking to engage with, using digital insight tools to reveal how and when they use real time digital technology and social media, and therefore how best to deliver news and opinion to them.

Support Defra’s ambition to leave the natural world in a better state for future generations, working on projects ranging from the illegal wildlife trade to the impact of plastic on the marine environment. This will include identifying behaviour trends and developing live insight reporting capabilities.

Improve our capabilities across the department by evaluating content and distribution, implementing a paid-for social media tool to gather data and insight, and delivering training sessions to colleagues.

This is a unique opportunity to enhance the success of our fast-paced communications team. You will therefore have considerable experience of shaping communications strategies, using digital channels and social media platforms to deliver strategic insight. With a keen awareness of emerging digital tools and platforms, you will have an intuitive ability to identify behaviour patterns and trends from your data analyses. Furthermore, your knowledge of paid-for insight tools such as Brandwatch and your ability to turn these insights into actions will prove invaluable. As a natural leader with great mentoring skills, you will have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

We aim to support the professional and personal wellbeing of everyone in Defra. Our benefits include generous annual leave, a contributory pension, staff bonuses and recognition, salary sacrifice benefit options, and an employee discount scheme. We also offer flexible working and a variety of learning and development opportunities.

Closing date: 9 October 2018.
