Various sources (I sound like the Daily Mail…) have claimed that the average job seeker spends approximately 90 seconds reading a job advert before deciding whether to press 'next' or 'apply'.

So with that in mind, I wanted to try and craft something that is short (and sweet), informative and hopefully something that gets your attention.

Here it goes…

I have partnered up with one of my long-term clients who have tasked me with recruiting a Senior C++ Developer... easy enough eh?

The company in question are a Global Organisation in the Financial Services and Banking space, with this role being based at their office in the Canary Wharf area. The reason behind the hire? Simple... they are in the midst of an enormous company-wide digital transformation and software engineering is a key focus for them during this period... ensuring they recruit top talent is key and this role is right at the top of their priority list.

In terms of technology, this role will sit within a long-standing area of the business but will have that 'new feel' - i.e. you won't be expected to work on ancient legacy code all of the time. This department is going through an enormous re-vamp of their application stack and the core focus of this role will be both the maintenance of a legacy codebase and greenfield product development using C++ as well as the wider technologies including Python, Scala, Java, PowerShell and T-SQL.

Moeover, this role is hybrid by nature, mixing core programming responsibilities with wider duties including mentoring, coaching, technical leadership and architectural input.

Fundamentally, this organisation believes in giving their Senior C++ Developers autonomy and creative control, encouraging autonomy and giving you the opportunity to bring ideas to the table, rather than sitting there and being crushed by the weight of micro-management.

But enough about them... this advert is all about you. Specifically, what you will need to know should you be interested in applying:

Product Development - A background in a product-focused role would be ideal as this position will involve working on both legacy and greenfield development for their internal systems/applications. Experience working on Enterprise-scale products would be even better, especially in the Financial Services and/or Banking domain.

Financial Services & Banking - Due to the nature of this organisation and the role, any experience wit real-time pricing & risk application development experience in fixed income markets would be a huge benefit. A good understanding of fixed income products (bonds, futures, swaps), yield curve construction, pricing, P&L and risk metrics would also be highly desirable.

Technical Knowledge - They work with a range of technologies with a specific focus on C++ development. Wider technologies used include Python, PowerShell, Scala, Java, Docker, Jenkins and JavaScript. Any exposure to AWS cloud development would also be an enormous bonus.

Methodologies - This organisation is admittedly Agile with a small 'a' and they currently operate a hybrid Agile/Waterfall approach to development. Don't get me wrong, they are looking for candidates who can bring strong Agile experience to the table, but just dont expect this role to be that of an Agile evangelist. They are on a journey and they are getting there... they just arent quite there yet!

Stakeholder Management - Although they aren't a Consultancy or MSP, this role will involve occasionally liaising with internal stakeholders over a range of technical and non-technical issues. Excellent communication skills are therefore crucial.

In return for demonstrating some (hopefully all!) of the above, you will benefit from a highly competitive salary alongside a flexible benefits package including a company bonus scheme, 10% pension, 25 days holiday and private healthcare.

So if you are genuinely sitting at work contemplating your next career move or simply fancy a chat to learn more about this role then give me a shout. You can call me on either 0191 338 7540 or 07943721308. Alternatively, if you are unable to chat then send me an email to [email protected].
