Summary

As a multi-skilled engineer, you will be responsible for making sure scientific equipment functions normally, via preventative or reactive maintenance. This could involve could work on electrical, electronic or mechanical systems.

Key responsibilities

Your duties will include:

           Carrying out reactive maintenance, diagnosing faults and repairing equipment

           Checking and calibrating instruments to make sure they are accurate

           Carrying out preventative maintenance and fitting new parts

           Carrying out quality and safety inspections

           Recording "helpdesk" calls and responding to scientific equipment breakdowns

           Arranging and hosting external service engineers

           Modifying and adapting equipment when required and assisting with research prototypes

           Identifying, sourcing and procuring components

           Keeping scientists and laboratory managers informed of progress

           Recording all activities relating to individual pieces of equipment via the asset management software

           Maintaining a stock of critical spares

The post-holders will answer to the Scientific Equipment Care Lead (or Deputy as required). This role involves significant levels of communication with scientific research and operational staff, as well as STPs and the Hard FM provider.

Key experience and competencies

The post holder should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values: bold, imaginative, open, dynamic and collegial, in addition to the following:

Essential:

           A qualification in a relevant electronic and electrical engineering discipline such as City and Guilds or BTec ONC or equivalent experience

           Experience of electronic and electrical fault-finding and repair of a wide range of devices, down to component level

           Good communication skills, both written and oral

           Ability to explain technical issues to non-technical personnel

           Positive attitude and work ethic

           Attention to detail

           Ability to work without supervision

           Flexibility and a willingness to learn

           Physically capable, as the role involve some moderate lifting / manual handling

Desirable

           Experience and a qualification in Inspection and Testing of Electrical equipment (Portable Appliance Testing)

           Any relevant qualifications or experience working with mechanical or refrigerant systems

           Previous roles in a scientific or healthcare environment

           Ability to adapt to new technologies and learn new skills

           Awareness of health and safety issues including Biological and Radioactive hazards
