Data Engineer

Summary

WRc is seeking a creative data engineer to join team working with water and gas sector clients. We are looking for an experienced data pipeline builder and data wrangler who will ensure optimal data delivery architecture. The data engineer will also be responsible for liaising with clients and internal teams on solution integration.

Role

WRc is seeking a creative data engineer to join our growing Asset Management Solutions team, and their water and gas sector clients. The ideal candidate is an experienced data pipeline builder and data wrangler who will help shape the future of WRc’s analytics offerings. The Data Engineer will support our data analysts, statisticians and data scientists on data initiatives and will ensure optimal data delivery architecture is consistent throughout ongoing projects. The data engineer will also be responsible for liaising with clients and internal teams on solution integration.

They must be self-directed and comfortable supporting the data needs of multiple teams, systems and products. The right candidate will be excited by the prospect of optimizing or even re-designing our company’s data architecture, in conjunction with our technical operations team, to support our next generation of projects, products and data initiatives.

Main Responsibilities:

As a Data Engineer at WRc you will:

- Create and maintain optimal data pipeline architecture,

- Assemble large, complex data sets that meet business requirements.

- Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability and repeatability, etc.

- Build the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using e.g. SQL and Postgres

- Work with data modellers and statisticians to build analytics tools that utilize the data pipeline to provide actionable insights relevant to our clients needs.

- Work with the wider business and their clients to assist with data-related technical issues and support their data infrastructure needs.

- Ensure that data is held appropriate in compliance with our, and our clients’ data security policies.

Requirements:

- Educated to degree level in Computer Science, Statistics, Informatics, Information Systems or another quantitative field.

- At least 2 years experience building and optimizing ‘big data’ data pipelines, architectures and data sets.

- Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL) as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases.

- Strong analytic skills related to working with unstructured datasets.

- A successful history of manipulating, processing and extracting value from large disconnected datasets.

- Experience with object-oriented and analytics scripting languages: Python, R.

- Have a demonstrable understanding of how to expose data from systems (for example, through APIs), and link data from multiple systems

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; proven ability to explain complex data solutions at a range of technical levels to the understanding of different audiences.

Desirable Skills

Because of the nature of the data with which we work, experience in geospatial techniques is also desirable.

Existing experience in a regulated utility environment would also be an advantage.
