Data Scientist

Summary

WRc is seeking an ambitious Data Scientist to help shape the future of WRc’s analytics offerings. You’ll provide analytics solutions including machine learning and linear programming methods to our Asset Management team and their clients, selecting and deploying appropriate tools and techniques.

Introduction to WRc plc

WRc plc is one of the world’s most innovative and independent scientific and engineering consultancies. Founded 90 years ago, we have a unique heritage. We are trusted by Government, industry, regulators and the utilities to solve today’s most significant and urgent challenges in the fields of water, gas, waste and the natural environment.

The WRc Opportunity

We have embarked on an ambitious plan that aims for significant growth and expansion in the next three years. This provides exciting opportunities for the right people to join us. You will play your part in our future by enabling us to achieve our commercial objectives through the delivery of customer-focused solutions. In return, you will be part of an organisation in which expertise is celebrated; an infectious passion for your specialist skillset is actively welcomed; and drive and performance are rewarded.

Role

WRc is seeking an ambitious Data Scientist to join our growing team. This role will help shape the future of WRc’s analytics offerings, working with our current team of statisticians, data managers, developers and analysts.

You’ll provide analytics solutions including machine learning and linear programming methods to our Asset Management team, and their gas and water sector clients. You’ll be responsible for ensuring the best tools and techniques are deployed by you and your team, whether this be using Python, R, or any appropriate toolset for a given problem. Your skillset will be deployed to ensure your colleagues continue to develop their expertise in machine learning, data management and data visualisation.

We guarantee that you will be intellectually and technically challenged by working simultaneously on a range of diverse projects. You could be solving an optimisation problem for one client on one day, and developing a new algorithm for interrogating timeseries data the next.

Projects will consist of exploratory inference models to investigate the interactions of key factors in ways that have never been investigated before, and deployable predictive models to be used in decisions that will help shape the future of our clients in the UK and beyond.

Main Responsibilities:

As a Data Scientist at WRc you will:

- lead the development and delivery of analytics solutions for our clients;

- create powerful visualisations to communicate your solutions and their findings;

- support the business development and exploitation of WRc’s analytics offerings;

- support the mentoring and professional development of colleagues.

Requirements:

- Educated to first degree level or higher, in applied mathematics, statistics, computing or a relevant scientific discipline.

- Track record of developing machine learning models and deploying data products with demonstrable effect in a business environment.

- Strong technical skills in data manipulation and extraction, linear programming, data analysis and model prototyping (R or similar) and model productionalisation (Python or similar).

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; proven ability to explain complex data solutions at a range of technical levels to the understanding of different audiences.

Essential Skills

- Analytical skills, including the application of machine learning and linear programming methods.

- Self-motivated with energy and enthusiasm.

- Flexible approach to work, with a proven ability to multi-task.

- Willingness to learn new skills and mentor others.

- Eligible to work permanently in the UK.

Desirable Skills

Because of the nature of the data with which we work, experience in geospatial techniques is also desirable.

Existing experience in a regulated utility environment would also be an advantage.
