Dstl (the Defence Science Technology Laboratory) is the largest public sector research establishment in the UK, with an annual turnover of some £600 million, around half of which is spent with industry and universities. We employ more than 3,700 staff, operating across a diverse range of specialisms including cyber, explosives and weapons.

We not only supply sensitive and specialist Science & Technology (S&T) for the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and wider government, but also provide expert advice to aid decision-making and act as a trusted interface between the Ministry, wider government, the private sector, academia and allies.

As Chief Technical Officer, reporting directly to our Chief Executive, you will act as a pivotal member of the Board and Executive team, while delivering an enterprise-level S&T portfolio.

You will ensure there is a high level of integration and coherence to our work to optimise its impact and exploitation. Constructively challenging our delivery teams and divisions to promote robust evidence-based decision-making, you will also build constructive external partnerships with suppliers and allied nations.

We are looking for a track record of outstanding senior leadership within complex, technical organisations, along with the credibility to win trust among senior officials and peers. You should have a good working knowledge of best practice research and development across the S&T field, so that subject matter experts trust your leadership and judgment.

It’s also important that you are an effective communicator, with commercial awareness, strong understanding of our technical applications and a good appreciation of the wider international relations context.
