There has never been a more exciting time to join the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra). Decisions made at Defra affect the whole of the United Kingdom. Responsible for the environment, the countryside and the rural economy, Defra’s diverse teams deal with a vast range of issues that profoundly impact on people’s day-to-day life - from the food we eat and the air we breathe, to the water we drink. Defra’s remit spans everything from the food and farming sectors, to protecting the environment from all manner of natural threats and hazards. Crucially, Defra is also one of the lead departments in delivering a successful exit from the European Union.

You will be working within the community of Defra statisticians who collectively oversee one of the largest portfolios of official and national statistics across government. We provide valued advice to ministers and to senior officials accountable for policy development and delivery across the department’s wide remit.

We currently looking to recruit to two Lead Statistician roles - one in the Animal and Plant Health and Welfare (APHW) Directorate and one in the Chief Scientific Advisors Office (CSAO).

APHW protects UK biosecurity. This team’s EU Exit projects seek to ensure a functioning UK trade system with enhanced protection of UK biosecurity against the significant cost of pest and disease outbreak. They are building on the UK’s global reputation for excellent animal health and welfare to promote exports, and to ensure we maintain public confidence both in the security and integrity of our animal and plant products and in the schemes that we operate.

The CSAO delivers cross-group leadership for science and analysis work. It supports the wider Defra Group and the European Union Exit Programme in assessing the issues and opportunities arising for international reporting as a result of the UK exiting the EU.

In these two statistical roles, you could be working on:

          working with stakeholders across the Defra Group to create an integrated analysis of international reporting requirements (what they are, how we currently deliver them and how we want them to evolve);

          leading on the extraction and collation of complex trade data for animals/animal products (from HMRC datasets and stakeholder information) and provide quality assurance of the data;

          for each specific area of interest (including Environment, Food, Farming and Bio-Security and Marine), develop a forward looking plan to maximize the value gained from this reporting and the integration, wherever possible, with related areas of domestic reporting

          providing statistical facts and detailed case studies for key strategies and parliamentary questions and publications, and any other statistical advice for the development of policies.

Everyone in Defra is supported to develop their skills and capabilities. Whichever role you take on, you will have access to learning and development from quality providers and support from mentors and coaches. We offer flexible working alongside a range of other policies and schemes to support your physical and emotional wellbeing. Our comprehensive benefits offer includes generous annual leave, a contributory pension, staff bonuses and recognition, volunteering days, childcare vouchers and other salary sacrifice options, and an employee discount scheme.

Closing date: 16 September 2018.
