Technology sits at the heart of everything we do at MI5, enabling us to disrupt serious threats to UK security. We’re currently looking for software engineers to work within our Engineering section.
Engineering is the heart of MI5, developing and maintaining tools and capabilities that support all aspects of our business. We solve problems that you don’t see elsewhere, in a unique context that comes with a satisfaction nobody else can offer you. We’re looking for engineers with fresh skills to build, maintain and enhance a wide variety of software products. You will play a key role in ensuring that our business can function efficiently and effectively 24/7. This could involve working on a multi million-pound intercept and intelligence processing system or a rapidly written application answering urgent questions for a high priority investigation.
You will work as part of a team, engineering new and existing products that drive our investigations, analysis and corporate functions. You will work closely with stakeholders, who may be analysts, investigators or other MI5 staff, and share your knowledge with peers to help them develop. Whatever you’ll be working on it will be unique, varied, and your efforts will have a direct and rewarding impact on the success of MI5.
Over your career you will have the opportunity to move between different teams, working with different technologies to solve the variety of challenging problems we face. Through this you’ll develop a depth and breadth of technical knowledge to build your engineering experience. We’ll also support and work with you to ensure you develop the skills you need for a rewarding career in MI5, through programmes that allow accreditation of your skills and knowledge, such as completion of British Computing Society qualifications. e.g. professional registration as a Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer.
Work in an agile product team as an active contributor to develop, test and release new features.
Help to maintain, monitor and support the team’s products.
Have a positive, can-do approach to good practice, enabling delivery of well-engineered, high quality software.
Own your engineering problems, working with your colleagues to propose and agree the best solution and then taking responsibility for its implementation.

We want engineers who are passionate problem solvers with the ability to see a problem in context and then communicate their ideas effectively. You will be the sort of person who actively participates in a team that delivers, supports and maintains solutions as well as engages within our engineering community to share your knowledge and learn from others.
Our engineers must be proactive, with a desire to seek out and exploit the challenges provided by the ever-changing world of technology. You need to be driven to improve yourself, working with your management and peers to identify opportunities for you to grow and develop both your technical and soft skills.
The first thing we will ask you to do is complete our pre-screening questions to find out if you meet our initial criteria. If you do meet these criteria we will then ask you to begin an application.
You will need to create a log in and provide your full name, email address and a memorable password. Once you have successfully created a personal account, you will be required to complete an initial registration form, providing contact details and equal opportunities monitoring information.
You will then be invited to upload your CV and complete an online application form. Our recruitment team will conduct a sift of your application. Successful applicants will be invited to a telephone interview, which will include some competency based questions and will explore your motivation to work for MI5.
Assuming you pass the telephone interview, you will be required to complete two Codility tests. Successful candidates will then be invited to attend an assessment centre at MI5. This will be followed by a security interview with a vetting officer.

Guaranteed Interview Scheme

Along with the standard eligibility requirements for this post, your application will be assessed on how far you meet the job requirements. However, we will still consider you if you’ve served overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of Her Majesty’s Government, studied abroad, or lived overseas with your parents.
Due to vetting requirements, you will need to be 18 years old, or above, to apply. Your application may take around six months to process.
