Principal Engineer

Salary: £60,000

Ordnance Survey has an opportunity available for a Principal Engineer to join the team based in Southampton. About the role:

As the national mapping agency for Great Britain, Ordnance Survey collects and maintains geographic data, using it to create a high quality and comprehensive suite of data sets, products and digital services. Increasingly our role is in the provision of digital services to a broad range of customers and end-users, both within Great Britain and beyond. Consequently, an effective IT test capability is vital to the organisation’s future, both in terms of the services we provide to customers, and ensuring the integrity of our own capabilities, which will increasingly make use of public cloud services.

We are looking for a Principal Engineer with a strong background in delivering Java based server-side solutions, to join our Engineering group. You will bring a depth of knowledge to deliver and integrate software to form a complete service experience across a wide variety of technologies and software designs, while supporting effective Agile delivery. Specifically, your technical knowledge will cover technologies such as Docker, PostGIS, Java (SpringBoot), Hibernate, Jackson, cloud services (Azure/AWS) and database design.  Experience around ESRI ArcGIS, Deployment, Debugging, Testing, Scaling and Monitoring Micro-Services and scalable interconnected cloud networks is desired.

You will be required to understand business requirements and work with agile teams to develop the appropriate software development components.

You will also play a critical role in providing organisational, and domain technical leadership, and strategic direction in their chosen field.

Duties and responsibilities:

- Provide industry leading expertise in their field of engineering, informing, and enabling the strategic objectives of Ordnance Survey

- Lead the software development of Ordnance Survey's most complex and critical projects, working with senior stakeholders across the business to develop roadmaps to address strategy

- Provide organisation wide thought leadership, training, and direction

- Collaborate and influence senior business stakeholders to shape, design and challenge roadmaps and objectives

- Collaborate with project and delivery managers to track the progress of technical delivery

- Provide technical assurance and direction on all software development within their domain

- Identify and deliver effective training, proactively share best practices.

- Communicate goals and issues between technical teams, lead engineers, architects, delivery managers and stakeholders

- Provide line management to Engineers

Skills and experience required to be our Principal Engineer:

You will need to demonstrate your track record against the following essential criteria:

- Qualified to relevant degree level (or equivalent commercial experience)

- 5+ years hands-on experience of delivering Java based solutions into a Production environment

- Demonstrable skills in Docker, Java 8, SQL, Database design and Cloud services (AWS, Azure)

- Industry leading skills in chosen field

- Demonstrable ability to lead, coach and mentor engineering teams

- Excellent track record in collaborating with senior business stakeholders

- Proven track record in development of technical strategies, leading complex software development projects and working in an agile environment

- Very good track record in influencing key business & technical stakeholders

- A keen interest in the latest technologies patterns and trends
