The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) are currently looking for a Communications Project Engineer to join our ICT team. The Communications Project Engineer will be responsible for assisting with the provision of all technical and operational communications systems and services (including but not limited to, HF and VHF radios, VSAT, Inmarsat, Iridium satellite equipment, antennae, instrumentation) within the head office at Cambridge, on five Antarctic research stations and on board two Antarctic going vessels.
This is an exciting and dynamic opportunity for someone with a background in communication or electronics engineering. You will need to be able to work effectively with a wide range of stake holders and have experience in communicating with both technical and non-technical audiences.
Purpose
1) Assist in the definition of a sustainable, ideally cost saving, effective and safe communications strategy.
2) Undertake the routine support and maintenance of the communications systems within BAS (Cambridge, Antarctica & Research Vessels).
3) To assist with, but not limited to, the planning and delivery of the following projects: RRS Sir David Attenborough - VSAT installation Halley re-location/automation Rothera Re-development Signy re-development VSAT upgrade - Bird Island & Signy Rothera HF Radio/Antenna replacement Review of air and field communications systems (Iridium and HF).
4) Assist with the training of wintering/summer only staff deployed to Antarctica to manage communications systems as required. Any other tasks within the remit of the role as requested by the Director.
5) The jobholder will be required to take a flexible approach to their work and accommodate new technologies as systems are developed.
Qualification
Relevant HNC or higher or substantial experience.
Duties
As Communications Project Engineer you will be responsible for assisting with the provision of all technical and operational communications systems and services (including but not limited to, HF and VHF radios, VSAT, Inmarsat, Iridium satellite equipment, antennae, instrumentation) within the head office at Cambridge, on five Antarctic research stations and on board two Antarctic going vessels. As Communications Project Engineer, you will be involved across the whole spectrum of this work as follows:
Project work - you will be able to take a project "work package" and manage it from the design stage through to on-site implementation. A wide range of hands-on engineering skills will be required as well as excellent planning skills and a flexible approach.
Maintenance - you will be expected to gain a good technical and operational understanding of all the equipment the department is responsible for and be able to offer remote assistance to engineers on the ground. You will also assist with a programme of planned maintenance for all key equipment and ensure documentation is kept up to date. You will provide support to remote staff.
Administration -you will undertake the administration of the stations spares holding. This will include keeping accurate records, identifying and purchasing required spares.
Secondary duties are:
To contribute to BAS at large through membership of committees as requested by line management. Represent BAS with external agencies in connection with all communication systems activities.
To participate in the routine activities of the IT department.
To be responsive, helpful and supportive to customers.
Promote the work of BAS and IT wherever possible.
To undertake other tasks as requested by line management.
To attend relevant courses and actively seek to broaden knowledge and skills relevant to responsibilities
Judgement and decision making
The post holder will need to be able to:
Solve problems and make sensible judgements under pressure regarding impact and severity of issues.
Work in a methodical manner in order to ensure disruption of the systems is kept to a minimum.
Become familiar and conversant with all BAS communication.
