Overall Purpose of role: Expert in developing software personally and also acts as an internal reference point for other developers, Business Analysts and Software Design Authorities in the Society. Supports others in the Development function by co-coordinating the implementation plans for projects, ensuing that projects are following the governance and controls in the published development lifecycle. Engages with other IT teams to ensure their business requirements are understood. Coaches and mentors programmers and analyst programmers to meet their potential.

Core activities:

* Provides software development expertise and knowledge from project initiation through definition and design phases to create technical solutions that meet business requirements.

* Works on behalf of solution design authority by interpreting high level requirements information from Solution architects and then produces development solutions to meet the identified requirement.

* Follows projects through build and test phases of the development lifecycle to ensure smooth implementation and closure.

* Contributes, analyses, considers the impact of work assigned, ensuring compatibility with other existing systems and advising colleagues with the creation of systems requirements definitions.

* Takes all necessary steps to ensure the quality and security of the code/solutions provided by; undertaking peer reviews, unit testing and or identifying specific ST or UT requirements as part of the impact analysis and hand over documentation for all work.

* Reports regularly progress on work assigned as required by line manager and other key stakeholders.

* Produces project documentation as required in a timely way and helps others to produce similar levels of documentation.

* Keeps up to date in own specialist area, or agreed new areas of self development, and act in capacity of 'resident expert', taking opportunities to 'spread knowledge' to other members of the department in a structured way when opportunities arise.

* Keeps up to date with industry methodologies within the systems software development arena and recommends how the Development function might embrace these strategies in future to improve the development lifecycle and systems development standards

* Represents development department at project meetings adding value with level of development knowledge and expertise.

* Provides out of hours guidance on points of service interruption, to ensure systems continue to meet ongoing operational business needs, service levels, performance standards and availability.

Other essential information:

Experience SCRUM/Agile programming methodologies or MSF would be an advantage
