Linux Systems Administrator  

Cranleigh, Surrey  

Up to £35k Depending on Experience

Our client is a small, friendly, fast-growing, multi-award-winning UK based company providing managed hosting and cloud services to the public and private sector. Since conception in 2002, our client has put security and compliance at the core of their services, in order to provide customers with trusted, competitively priced, highly secure and reliable cloud hosting solutions. They have a comprehensive suite of in-house developed systems, mostly Linux-based using Python, Django and MySQL, which automate many of their business processes.  

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Linux Systems Administrator to join our client’s friendly team.   

You will be responsible for providing 2nd line customer support and as such your principal tasks will include:  

- Linux system administration  

- Provisioning and set up of servers and network equipment   

- Engineering highly available solutions for our infrastructure and customers  

- Configuration and patch management   

- Monitoring and fault resolution   

- Maintaining excellent documentation  

You will also be required to be 24/7 on-call one week in seven with additional compensation.  

A successful candidate must have:  

- Proven experience of Linux system administration with Debian/Ubuntu/RHEL  

- Knowledge of TCP/IP networking and internet protocols   

- Experience of Linux firewalling with iptables (Shorewall, CSF etc.)  

- Knowledge of Virtualisation/Cloud technologies (Xen/KVM/qemu/Openstack etc.)  

- Experience of monitoring with Nagios, check_mk and SNMP  

As a Linux Systems Administrator, you should have excellent communication skills, both written and oral, as well as good team-working skills. You should also be self-motivated, proactive, autonomous and highly organised. The ability to absorb and retain complex technical information rapidly, strong problem solving and analysis skills are equally important.  

It would be beneficial if you had relevant qualifications e.g. LPI/RHCE or a degree in science, maths, engineering or technology.  

It would also be useful if you had any of the following:  

- Experience of HA and load balancing technologies   

- Experience of MySQL and replication   

- Automation experience with Puppet/Ansible   

- Good scripting abilities in Bash/Python   

- Experience of Linux kernel tuning   

- Experience in high security hosting environment   

Due to our client’s rural location, you should be able to drive and have access to your own vehicle. Alternatively, they offer a shuttle bus service from Guildford train station via Godalming. 

As part of the recruitment process you will be required to complete personality profiling, aptitude tests as well as a basic DBS check and Security Clearance.
