About the role:

We are seeking a Linux Systems Administrator to join our dynamic Scientific Computing Team. You will manage, configure and administer a KVM/QEMU based virtualisation infrastructure, Linux virtual machines and Spectrum Scale based storage systems used for scientific data processing, analysis and archiving for the Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology Group (CEP) and the Manchester Centre for Cancer Biomarker Sciences (MCCBS) at CRUK Manchester Institute. Through these efforts you will contribute to CEP/MCCBS aims to enhance clinical trials of new anticancer therapies through biomarker research. You will be required to work closely with the CEP/MCCBS scientific team and participate in an established collaboration with a research group at University of South California.

Calculations are performed on a KVM/QEMU based virtualisation infrastructure and a 1,500 core HPC Linux cluster that are attached to several storage systems with a total capacity of 4 petabyte. The systems reside in a dedicated data centre on site. The Scientific Computing team provides a stimulating and motivating work environment that encourages and supports continuous training in this area.

About you:

The post will suit an applicant looking to join a highly interdisciplinary environment that combines biology with computer science, mathematics and software engineering, with the end goal of advancing our understanding of biomarkers to provide personalised medicine for cancer patients. You should have a BSc degree in computational science or related subject (or equivalent relevant experience) and substantial experience in administering Linux systems, preferably KVM/QEMU based virtualisation infrastructures and the ability to write scripts and experience administering different types of Linux server.

You will have excellent communication skills together with a proven ability to work both independently and effectively within a team. An awareness of biology and/or previous experience working with scientific researchers is desirable.
