Job Title: Process Engineer (Cryogenic)

The Company aims to accelerate the adoption of fusion power generation by combining two emerging technologies - spherical tokamaks and high-temperature superconductors (HTS). The company is developing a series of technology demonstration prototypes, culminating in a pilot plant which will exceed fusion energy breakeven.

The Role:

The successful candidate will be part of the Engineering team, which is responsible for delivery of ST40. The successful candidate will be a creative engineer with the ability to enable the Company to become a world leader in spherical Tokamak design for fusion applications.

Main Responsibilities:

           Design/specification, installation and commissioning of cryogenic systems for cooling copper coils of HTS magnet systems

           Liaising with other engineers responsible for magnet design, tokamak physics, power supplies and mechanical integration

           Liaising with external contractors for supply of cryogenic hardware, ultimately leading to supply of the fusion magnet cryo-plant

           Internally the post holder will report to the ST40 Project Manager and liaise with the Electrical Engineering Group manager, Research Director and other mechanical, electrical and design engineers and working within the Company

           Externally the post holder will liaise with manufacturers, component suppliers and technical consultants in industry and academia

           The post will involve occasional travel within the UK and overseas

The Candidate:

Essential:

           Degree in Chemical or Process Engineering

           PhD in Engineering or Physics with a focus on cryogenics, or equivalent industrial experience

           Relevant experience of cryogenic systems design and/or process control at an appropriate level in an industrial manufacturing or technology prototyping environment

           Experience in the design and manufacture of large scale cryogenic devices, and/or experience of cryogenic process control

           Experience of project management, preferably in large industrial plant or R&D environment

           Knowledge of current manufacturing methods and materials

           Demonstrated track record of practical and innovative engineering in a technology development environment

           Experience with risk assessment and design for manufacture

           Fully conversant with engineering and process control drawings and documentation methods

           Demonstrate a clear understanding of the health & safety requirements relevant to the role

Desirable:

           Experience with design, specification or operation of cryogenic systems for superconducting magnets

           Knowledge of cryogenic design methods and associated design tools

           Knowledge of electrical and fluid control engineering and/or instrumentation

           3D visualization and CAD skills

           Understanding and awareness of intellectual property

           Experience using test and diagnostic equipment

           Experience of failure modes and effects / reliability analysis
