After spending some time on the online job boards scanning some of the frankly awful job ads out there, I thought I would take it upon myself to write up something that is short and (hopefully) sweet, but with the right amount of flavour.

So without further a do, let me take you on a little journey...

The journey begins with the organisation in question, essentially a global enterprise in the heart of the North West - Central Manchester. They are recruiting for an experienced Technical Director as part of a wider recruitment drive, aimed at both reshaping and restructuring their UK-based software engineering function.

The organisation themselves sit within the financial services/banking space and are in the midst of a company-wide Agile transformation aimed at improving and modernising the way they deliver content to their customers. This is one of a number of Director-level roles that form the core of this recruitment piece and this is therefore a hugely important part of their 2018 hiring plans.

The journey continues with the role, based within their core engineering practice that covers their main digital products (10 or 12 in total) and basically a mix between 'Technical Director' and 'Software Engineering Director'.

The role encompasses a range of disciplines including stakeholder management (up to c-level), technical leadership, technical strategy, high-level software engineering and consultancy. Leadership is particularly important as each Technical Director within the organisation looks after between 50 - 70 people at any given time, meaning you will essentially be given the keys to a large change piece.

In terms of the specifics of the role, rather than simply regurgitating the job description (I see you rival recruitment agencies!), I thought I would highlight a couple of the key focuses below:

Stakeholder Management - First and foremost, the core focus of this role will involve engaging with stakeholders (up to c-level) on a daily basis. Due to the technical nature of the role, you will be expected to engage with both technical and business-facing stakeholders so excellent communication skills and a proven track record both managing and influencing stakeholder expectations is a crucial requirement for this role.

Leadership & Strategy - Due to the senior nature of this role, a large focus will involve getting involved in high-level technical discussions around roadmaps and technical change. This organisation are product-based and are going through a period of innovation, focusing on greenfield development and new technology within the FinTech and open bankling space. A background getting involved in delivering large pieces of technical change and leading said projects is therefore crucial to be considered for this role.

Software Engineering Background - Although the formal title is 'Technical Director', this role could easily be called 'Director of Software Engineering' as the core focus will be leading an engineering function for one of their core products/silos. Your role will involve engaging with Software Engineers, Development Managers and Architects on a daily basis so a background working in hands on programming/architecture is a pre-requisite. Their technology estate is diverse (.NET, Java, React, Spring, AWS, Docker) so an understanding of various technologies is the preference.

Methodologies & Processes - As I mentioned earlier in the ad, this organisation are in the midst of a company-wide Agile transformation but they aren't there just yet. This transformation depends on recruitment (i.e. bringing in the right people who can help drive this change) and your role at Director-level will play an enormous part in this. They currently have a hybrid Agile/Waterfall model so commercial experience in that sort of environment, as well as wider knowledge of processes such as TDD, BDD, DevOps and Continuous Integration would be a huge benefit.

But ultimately, what this organisation wants is a passionate leader with a genuine enthusiasm for technology and the capability of delivering large portfolios of work in a highly-challenging environment. Sounds simple enough right?

Where this journey ends is completely up to you - if you'd like it to end right here then thank you for reading the advert... I hope it was at least a bit better than the standard adverts online!
