Description:
Solution Architects are required to combine both their professional experience and knowledge to solve a range of customer or market problems that may be very specific or of considerable breadth. Roles are likely to be extremely flexible and operate within a matrix structure depending on the demands facing the Results business. Ultimately Solution Architects should have skills that are transferable to any part of the Education organisation.
Purpose:
Solution Architects will work with customers, sales staff and delivery teams to create solutions to customer problems. These solutions may include processes, services, and a technical solution which together deliver to the customer's needs. Solution Architects may work as part of a bid team in response to a customer's ITT, or directly with the customer in response to a specific change request.
Solution Architects will:
* Create requirement specifications by interpreting a customers' requirements
* Define high level solutions to meet customers' requirements
* Ensure the solution boundary is defined and that interfaces across boundaries (either in customer or client systems or applications) are specified
* Articulate solutions to all stakeholders and adopt a position as the solution authority
* Work closely with the delivery team throughout the delivery lifecycle providing guidance and steering to ensure a successful delivery
* Work directly with and assist the customer during acceptance phases
* Position solutions in the clients best interests while recognising and compromising with customers where necessary
* Operate independently on a customer site as a chargeable resource
Influence
Solution Architects will primarily interface with IS Senior Managers, the Information Security Officer, IS Development Leaders, Network Services delivery teams, the Hosting Manager and the support teams, where influence over senior software developers and infrastructure specialists will be particularly required. The Solution Architects will communicate with senior management and senior technical experts to agree cost models and specific technical details that satisfy the requirements within budgetary parameters.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
At the G/H level, the Solution Architect should have 2 years' experience delivering bespoke business system developments (software or infrastructure).
The key skills are:
Highly productive and self-sufficient with a drive to produce compelling and winning bids or work closely with off-shore development teams on active projects to ensure effective and timely solution delivery.
Expert in the relevant technologies and methodologies, including:
* Hardware and Software system design techniques and best practice
* Standard development toolset expertise and requirements analysis techniques
Decision Making:
Demonstrates ownership of the technical design and produces simple, elegant and cost-effective
Solutions and is confident to make tough technical decisions, showing good judgement and
escalating when appropriate.
Customer Focus:
* Demonstrate an accurate, thorough understanding of customer needs and issues and drives product change according to this understanding. Uses this understanding to present why the products are relevant and how they help the customers.
