Bristol, Wallingford and Exeter with occasional UK travel

One permanent role and one two-year fixed-term contract with the potential for permanency.

The Environment Agency is vital to the future of the British population. Entrusted with protecting and improving the environment, our work impacts on everything from the nation’s fisheries to power stations and the cleaning products used in every home. As an organisation within the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), and supported by the Health and Safety Executive, our 10,600 employees work collaboratively to come up with innovative solutions to complex situations, ultimately enhancing the quality of our land, water and biodiversity.

As the UK prepares to leave the European Union, we are now faced with the interesting challenge of ensuring a robust chemicals strategy is in place to develop our priorities and manage the impact of chemicals on our environment post-EU exit. As such, you will:

Form the evidence base for these decisions, with a particular focus on under-studied and emerging chemicals of concern and chemical indicators, thereby securing our future risk management strategies.

Communicate complex issues, ideas and data to a varied audience, using a variety of methods to interpret your findings. These audiences will include the extended Defra network, industry connections and NGOs.

Compile and present data which will be used within a pilot prioritisation system on chemicals. You will then develop agile monitoring programmes to identify emerging priorities.

Contribute to the development of a chemicals evidence project to manage chemical risks to water. This may include trend analysis and risk mapping.

Educated to degree-level in environmental sciences or a related topic, you will excel in this fantastic role if you have a sharp eye for detail and are able to bring complex data and big data sets together into an easy-to-understand format. A flexible team-player with good organisational and communication skills, you will be adept at adjusting your presenting style to your current audience. With the confidence to work autonomously within a wider remote team, it would be distinctly advantageous if you had good statistical knowledge and simple coding skills, plus the capacity to manipulate data using XL.

If you would enjoy contributing to lasting environmental protection, then this is the role for you. With access to industry-leading projects and a good work/life balance, this position is further enhanced by a generous holiday allowance, flexible working and a desirable pension scheme. With plenty of support and encouragement from your colleagues and the wider Defra network, your career will have the scope to follow a fascinating trajectory with the Environment Agency.

Closing date: 24 June 2018.
