Varied. Challenging. Rewarding. These are just some of the words we’d use to describe a regular day as an Intelligence Analyst in HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). We’re the government authority that collects taxes and duties owed by members of the public and businesses, which means that we’re responsible for ensuring the nation has enough funding to cover all public services and helping families and individuals with financial support. It’s vitally important that everyone pays what they owe - though the dishonest few will always try to cheat the system. It’s because of the dishonest people and businesses that we need your help.

We’re looking for proactive people to join us and embark on a training programme to help us tackle criminal activity. Perhaps you think you’re not qualified to do that - well you’d be wrong. We give our analysts a complete course of training to do the job. Within the first few months you’ll attend the Government Intelligence Analyst Training - GIAT. You’ll join the Intelligence Analysis profession and can complete modules to work towards a City and Guilds qualification in Intelligence Analysis. You’ll also attend a myriad of interesting week long training courses with students from other government departments. You’ll be providing analytical support to HMRC intelligence and investigation teams, which means you’ll work on anything from smuggling to money laundering. You’ll identify, collect, interpret, analyse and evaluate data and information from a variety of sources and turn it into intelligence to support criminal and civil cases. You’ll produce reports on your findings and include your recommendations on the next stages of intervention. Your input will prove vital in securing prosecutions.

You’ll work on several interesting and varied cases at any one time, so you’ll need to be good at juggling the competing demands of multiple projects. You’ll be working in a high pressured environment, delivering results quickly and efficiently, using your problem solving capabilities to identify gaps in information and understand complex issues. You’ll need good verbal and written communication and leadership skills, because your clear advice will prove crucial in helping us deliver a system that is fair for all. You’ll be naturally inquisitive, enjoy talking to people, and working within a collaborative team.

At HMRC, we believe in supporting our staff. So when you join us, you can expect a high level of career satisfaction which is further enhanced by a dedicated mentor and ongoing development opportunities. We’ll look after your home life too, with access to a civil service pension. We want your work to fit around your lifestyle, this role is available for full-time, part-time or flexible working arrangements.

This role is of national significance. Your work could identify newly emerging tax avoidance trends and may ultimately impact on government policy development. So if you’re tempted to do something genuinely fascinating and important with your life, and you’d like to establish a varied career in the process, then get in touch today and let’s discuss where HMRC could take you.
