Play a significant role in shaping the future of an organisation at the heart of Britain’s food, farming, environment and rural economy.

With large and wide-ranging responsibilities, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) works collaboratively to protect the environment and to maintain and grow the rural economy. Our vital work is far-reaching and complex. Plus the UK’s impending exit from the EU continues to set us absorbing challenges. With work that cannot be found anywhere else in the private sector, this career-defining opportunity offers professional development and networking in an environment where everyone is passionate about what they do.

As a Grade 7 Senior Project Manager, you will take ownership of a range of complex projects within the Defra EU Exit Programme. Your specific responsibilities will vary depending on your project allocation, but generally include full project delivery and management, project planning and reporting, and some elements of supporting business transformation. Providing visible and effective leadership with project directors and SROs to deliver business case benefits and outcomes, you will also manage a number of high profile stakeholders with conflicting priorities and manage risk accordingly.

With a proven track record of working at pace to react to and shape fast-moving events, you must be able to work effectively in an environment of ambiguity, political sensitivity and continual change. Ideally with an IT project management background, you should have a working knowledge of a range of project management disciplines. You must also demonstrate the ability to identify, share and promote best practices and lessons learned, to optimise project delivery and support a culture of continuous improvement. Like our organisation, you should be continually striving to be your best, focussed on outcomes and constantly challenging yourself.

We aim to support the professional and personal wellbeing of everyone in Defra. Our benefits include generous annual leave, a contributory pension, staff bonuses and recognition, salary sacrifice benefit options, and an employee discount scheme. We also offer flexible working and a variety of learning and development opportunities.

Closing date for applications: 7 May 2018.
