MI5 are seeking individuals to join our 2nd line support team. As an engineer in this team, your primary function will be supporting some of MI5’s operational IT applications. You will have the opportunity to make a direct, positive impact on the work of MI5 by ensuring the swift resolution of problems to keep these applications functioning and running effectively; and ultimately contribute to protecting the UK from threats to national security.

The Role

This is an excellent opportunity to develop a range of technical skills. You will be responsible for managing incidents and assisting others to resolve problems relating to a range of applications which are relied upon for the success of MI5’s operational and investigative work. You will develop and maintain an end to end technical knowledge of these applications.

You will be expected to work autonomously and as part of the wider team, drawing on the skills of peers and colleagues within the engineering teams and other support functions to ensure efficient resolution of all incidents and problems. Therefore, building and maintaining close working relationships with these teams is crucial to success in this role.

There will be occasional travel to other sites, and you will be expected to join the out of hours on-call rota (for which an on-call allowance is payable), working flexibly whilst responding to incidents at any time of the day.

Key Responsibilities

As a 2nd Line Support Engineer, you will:

Assist the senior engineers, using your technical knowledge, with the resolution of all incidents relating to our operational IT platforms, working with colleagues in IT services to help manage incident resolution.

Liaise daily with other support teams, 3rd line and development teams and play an active part as a member of the team supporting major investigations.

Liaise regularly with customers to understand IT issues.

Triage faults, service improvements and technologies, assessing their impact on BAU support.

Operate within the out of hours on-call cover rota.

Depending on skills and experience demonstrated in the recruitment process, as a Senior 2nd Line Support Engineer you may also have the opportunity to:

Work with other senior engineers to manage resource requirements for resolutions.

Assist in the design and delivery of new technologies and infrastructure components for our various operational IT platforms.

Manage, as well as operate within the out of houses on-call cover rota.

The Person

We are seeking individuals who can demonstrate good communication skills who are keen to learn and develop further their technical knowledge. You will have an understanding of the role of a second line support engineer, and able to demonstrate good problem solving skills. Experience of working on Windows and LINUX server applications, and ITIL Foundation would be desirable for the Support Engineer and essential for the Senior Support Engineer role.

To apply to MI5 you must be a born or naturalised British citizen, over 18 years old and normally have lived in the UK for nine of the last ten years. You should not discuss your application, other than with your partner or close family member.
