For anybody in the Project Management profession, seeking a new role can be an absolute nightmare due to the mundane nature of job ads.

Whether its copy-and-pasted job descriptions, project management adverts asking for 'project management experience' or simply adverts that tell you nothing about the role, navigating the online job boards for prospective candidates can be a pretty brutal experience.

So with that in mind, I thought I would craft a short (and hopefully sweet) ad that gives you some insight into this specific role. Who knows... you might end up wanting to chat after reading it!

... (tactic for building suspense)

So.. the role in question is actually a newly released requirement and part of an enormous recruitment drive by one of my key UK-based clients.

The client is a global organisation who have spent the last 12-18 months going through an enormous company-wide transformation, helping shape the way they deliver their services to an ever-growing customer base. Based our of their Northampton office, you will essentially be tasked with taking ownership of a key portfolio of technical projects, helping shape the delivery both within the agreed timescales (hopefully) and within budget (again... hopefully!).

In terms of the key accountabilities and responsibilities, rather than regurgitating the job description, I have decided to break down the primary focus areas... see below:

Technical Delivery - First and foremost, the core focus of this role will involve delivering a range of technical projects and is therefore a technical role. Don't get me wrong, you won't be coding or fixing any servers, but you will be expected to liaise with technical stakeholders (Architects, QA, Engineers) throughout the delivery lifecycle. A proven track record delivering software projects (Java, C#, .NET, COBOL, SQL etc.) is therefore essential to be considered suitable for this role.

Stakeholder Management - This role is highly stakeholder-facing so the ability to liaise with both technical and non-technical stakeholders is a key focus. You will work with a range of stakeholders (right up to c-level) and need to have strong communication skills, as well as an ability to both influence and manage expectations.

Governance & Reporting - Due to the regulated nature of this organisation, it is crucial that you are able to demonstrate an understanding of project governance. A key focus of your role will involve ensuring that all project status reporting is accurate, informative and timely, and directly provides progress reports as agreed as part of the governance framework at agreed intervals. A background working in a similar environment (e.g. banking, financial services, law, insurance) would therefore be a huge benefit.

Delivery Methodologies - A hybrid background covering both Agile and Waterfall methodologies would be preferred due to the frankly hybrid nature of their engineering function. Like most organisations, they are on an 'Agile journey' but have taken the stance that Agile will be used where it can benefit the organisation rather than forced on projects where it wouldnt work. You should be able to demonstrate a diverse background (Agile, Scrum, Waterfall, PRINCE2) with the key focus being 'adaptability'.

Financial Management - Another important focus of this role will involve taking full responsibility for constructing and managing the project financials (budget, forecast, actuals). The typical budgets involved in this role are between £1-3 million so a proven track record delivering enterprise-scale projects within assigned budgets is therefore key to be considered for this role.

So there you have it. An advert that is both short (I think) and sweet (I hope) - the question remains... do you want to apply?

If the answer is a resounding 'yes' then give me a shout. You can call me on either 0191 338 7540 or 07943721308. Alternatively, you can send me an email to [email protected] or just drop me a message on LinkedIn by searching for 'Liam Haghighat' (its no surprise that I am pretty easy to find!).

Anything discussed will remain completely confidential.
