Senior Linux Engineer - Cyber Security
This is a key role in the Platform Services team which has primary focus on delivering IT to underpin Cyber Security Services, but also supports the delivery of Corporate IT Services.
Key Accountabilities:
The Senior Linux Engineer will;
* Apply and enforce systems security processes, policies and tools as defined by the Security Manager, across the business to protect the integrity of systems and to ensure full compliance with corporate and legal requirements.
* Act as an escalation and support point in regard of ensuring other team members (across IT infrastructure and project teams) in meeting the above objective around Cyber security
* Ensure the amount of downtime for Linux systems is minimised by the timely recovery of incident tickets in line with Service Level Agreements.
* Be expected to lead business critical change projects, including allocating work to others.
* Be responsible for ensuring the live environment is available to the business and is not compromised by project developments or routine BAU changes.
* The development of 'standard' builds/services for adoption across the estate to gain maximum efficiency and effectiveness in Linux deployments.
* Technical Leadership of all staff directly (or indirectly) managing and supporting Linux Systems.
* Perform proactive reviews of the current architecture and configuration to ensure the best security practices and standards are applied at all times.
* Highlight areas of concern, and ideas for improvement, when there is belief that systems or services could be impacted or improved.
* Consult with the IT Architecture team in the development of Network-related Strategic roadmaps.
Essential Technical skills:
* CentOS or Red Hat Enterprise Linux
* Apache httpd
* IP Tables
* Shell scripting
Desirable Technical skills:
* SELinux
* MySQL and/or PostgreSQL.
* MOD_Security
* Squid
* BIND DNS
* Python
* Nagios
Key Capabilities
* Professional in dress, manner and communication
* Demonstrates a willingness to learn through self-taught and course driven avenues
* Represents and drives the IT strategy as defined by the Platform Services Manager and the Head of IT Operations.
Travel
Willingness to travel to other sites on an occasional basis (UK driving license essential).
Out of Hours
Willingness to work early / late shifts to provide extended hours cover and to support out of hours change in agreed maintenance windows for Customer Services.
Experience & Qualifications:
Desirable qualification: RHCE
* Experience with Security practices with regard to Linux server hardening
* Experience working in a highly available environment
* Experience maintaining systems according to Service Level Agreements following change control processes and procedures.
* Desirable ITIL Foundation certificated
* Experience of working within an ISO27001 certified environment.
