CoSector are seeking a knowledgeable and experienced IT Security Specialist to join their security team. As a member of this team, the role holder will significantly contribute to the IT security of all University staff, students, external customers and IT services, co-ordinating the response to IT security incidents and improving the defence of the University’s IT services and information assets.

CoSector is responsible for the operational running of core ICT services to the central University of London, as well as providing IT services to a number of external customers within the HE sector.

The Role

As an IT Security Specialist you will be expected to be an authority on security threats.

You will act as a primary technical lead for all of the University's security incidents and you will provide technical or policy advice on how to mitigate threats or resolve incidents. In liaison with the University’s IT Security Manager, instruct other departments and or customers to undertake mitigating actions. You will adhere to, and suggest improvements to, the Incident Response Plan and help ensure that the University meets its compliance obligations, such as GPDR.

You will have responsibility for pen testing externally facing systems according to the University's Penetration Testing Policy, conducting regular vulnerability scanning across the University's network and systems, and proactively monitoring the Network Intrusion Detection Systems. You will also be instrumental in the ongoing configuration of the University’s new SIEM solution.

As well as threat and incident response, you are expected to undertake work to assist in the development and implementation of services that enhance the security of the University's infrastructure that can be applied across the University. You will assist the University’s IT Security Manager by recommending new services or changes to existing services to enhance the University's security, as well as creating cyber security awareness initiatives such as phishing exercises and training workshops, which you will help present.

Furthermore, CoSector provides incident response and weekend security monitoring to the University, outside of normal working hours. You will be expected to contribute to security analysis and incident response services.

To be considered for this role you must have a good first-degree standard in a technical discipline or equivalent experience. You will have substantial experience of providing or supporting IT Services in an IT service environment. You will have substantial experience in resolving security or infrastructure IT incidents. You will be committed to high standards with a patient, level-headed disposition and the ability to work flexibly and to persevere and remain effective under pressure.

With reference to technical knowledge and skills you will have extensive knowledge of security infrastructure, solutions and operation including penetration testing and network intrusion detection. You will have knowledge of security issues applied to the following: Microsoft Windows, Macintosh OS X, Linux operating systems, network infrastructure and email. You have knowledge of IT security issues and vulnerabilities and ability to adapt to changes and keep up with new technologies using their own initiative.
