Technology plays an ever increasing and important role in our lives. The amount of personal data being collected, processed and transmitted by new technologies is creating ever more complex challenges for privacy and data protection at a time when the regulatory environment is undergoing the biggest change in the last twenty years.

If you have strong technical knowledge, skills and experience, this is a unique opportunity to continue to develop and enjoy plenty of variety in technology roles that make a difference.

The team

The Technology Policy Department is a centre of technical expertise, responsible for monitoring and evaluating current and emerging technologies, assessing their impact on information rights and developing the ICO’s response. We develop technology-focussed advice and guidance for both UK organisations and citizens.

Working with colleagues from across the ICO, the department plays a vital role in the development of a technical underpinning to the ICO’s regulatory activities, including data protection, freedom of information and e-privacy.

The roles

We are recruiting for two Senior Technology Officers.

Senior Technology Officers take the lead on specific technology-related policy activities which affect information rights. The role involves applying in-depth technical knowledge and expertise to privacy issues, producing guidance, researching the technological environment and ensuring the ICO stays ahead in a time of rapid change.

You may also involve representing the ICO, such as liaising with key technology stakeholders at national and international level and/or undertaking speaking engagements of a technology-related nature.

Skills you’ll need

You will need to have relevant experience, up to date expert knowledge of current trends and practices relating to the use of information communications and IT security technologies and extensive knowledge of computing sciences IT theories principles and practices.

In addition to your strong technical knowledge, you will be responsible, reliable and professional with excellent analytical skills. You must be a good communicator with the ability to write well. With your ability to communicate with colleagues and members of the public, you will be able to explain complex technical matters in a simple and appropriate manner. You will have good research skills and the ability to apply your knowledge to new and emerging technologies in order to understand their impact on information rights.

You will also need a flexible approach, as the roles will involve responding to tight deadlines as well as national/international travel and some overnight stays.
