We are looking for committed, skilled and enthusiastic colleagues to join our ICT team.

We now have an exciting opportunity for a Specialist Networking and Security Engineer to run the local area network at the Porton Down site. Working as part of a wider team you will manage a network that supports critical services for the benefit of the population’s health. The responsibilities of the role include:

Running the local and wide area network infrastructure at the Porton site,

Working with the team to support the network infrastructure across the wider organisation,

Provide, manage and maintain network and security services to the wider business,

Managing security systems, including firewalls, SIEM and remote access,

Deploying and managing secure wireless networking infrastructure,

Producing and maintaining documentation,

Monitoring system health and availability,

Operational security monitoring,

Responding to security information and events,

Handling security incidents.

You will be able to demonstrate knowledge, experience and skills in the following areas:

Secure configuration concepts and standards,

Corporate networks, multilayer switching and routing,

Wireless networking,

Network and infrastructure security, including firewalls, especially CheckPoint and Juniper,

Virtual Private Networks,

Wide Area Network architectures,

Structured cabling and optical fibre infrastructures,

Strong troubleshooting and network diagnostic skills,

Sound knowledge of TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, OSPF, VPN, IPSEC, MPLS,

Understanding of network and authentication services: eg DNS, RADIUS, Active Directory,

Understanding of virtualization concepts.

In PHE we are dedicated to protecting the health of the public. This is a 24x7 requirement, therefore you will be required to participate in an out-of-hours on-call rota which provides support cover for ICT emergencies, ensuring, in particular, that the services for which you are responsible meet the service delivery criteria. Much of this work is undertaken remotely, so can fit in with family responsibilities.

This role is based at the Porton site but some travelling to other PHE locations will be required, though this is not expected to be extensive.
