Who we are

Manchester is one of the most extensive higher education centres in Europe and the most popular city for students in the UK. We are at the heart of it, delivering cutting-edge skills to people from 120 countries - 94% of whom go into work or further study within six months of graduating. Since 2006, we have invested £350 million into our exceptional campus to deliver our vision of being the best modern university, and we continue to achieve and innovate every day.

Where you’ll work:

With more than 200 people, our Technical Services team supports academics, researchers and students in laboratory, workshop and field settings, and underpins our teaching, research, enterprise and public engagement activities. Committed to continuous improvement, the team assists us in delivering an exceptional student experience and is central to our continued success. With increased research taking place in Computer Science and Engineering disciplines, the team is growing fast, creating exciting opportunities for personal and professional development.

About the role:

As a specialist in Infrastructure and Security, you will provide technical advice, training and instruction to staff and students utilising specialist engineering computer hardware and software. Operating mainly within our Science and Engineering Laboratories and Workshops, you will demonstrate equipment and techniques to students, develop and deliver induction courses, and produce manuals and standard operating procedures. At the same time, you will assist with a broad spectrum of projects and work closely with suppliers to optimise troubleshooting and shape future purchasing decisions.

About You:

Fully familiar with modern computing systems and software, you will bring broad expertise in ANSYS, SOLIDWORKS and OptSim, ideally backed by working knowledge of Windows HPC and Linux. Whether you join us from a computing or engineering background, you will be a skilled project manager with knowledge of software licensing, interface configuration, programming and scripting, data and application servers, backup and disaster management. Finally, you should be capable of using hand tools and test and monitoring equipment, and you will be able to interface effectively with both students and colleagues of all disciplines.
