Data Designers help define the vision of the project alongside the other creative disciplines. At Fjord, we break down the walls between design and engineering to synthesize data solutions that improve the human experience.

We’re looking for a Data Design Lead to support the build out of this emerging discipline. Data is informing and driving new human experiences in work and life. Data Design includes designing with data (identifying, accessing and exploring data sources), designing for data (creating new data-driven experiences) and data driven design (automation of personalized experiences). As a Data Design Lead you will be responsible for defining and conducting activities throughout project lifecycles and helping to shape the discipline as it evolves.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

- Lead Data Design activities including client workshops, stakeholder interviews, data gathering, ideation, design and development

- Working with other design disciplines and engineers to bring a data perspective to client’s problems

- Review and reframe client design briefs to leverage data opportunities

- Drive quantitative, human-centric research by exploring and inspecting client, 3rd party and open data sources

- Generate data visualizations and digital prototypes that explore patterns, communicate insights or drive new service experiences across web, mobile, wearable or smart environments

- Define and apply signals and metrics within digital services that provide insight into the service performance, evolution and strategic roadmap

- Define and own the project direction and drive the approach towards clear and meaningful outcomes and work

- Balance the business objectives, technical feasibility and user experience objectives of the project. Be prepared to challenge requirements.

- Establish and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders.

- Identify potential risks, and work to manage changes in scope and devise contingency plans.

- Produce lean technical specification, API documentation and quality control requirements.

- Assume responsibility for quality of Data+Design team and offering on projects.

- Take an active role in team activities, e.g. design crit sessions and best practice initiatives

- Assess performance and provide career guidance to the team

- Participate and contribute to external and internal design and data communities as a Fjordian

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

- 7+ years professional experience incorporating visualization development, analytics, digital product creation, team management and client engagement

- History of tackling and solving complex challenges using data

- Strong strategic, analytical and problem-solving skills that balance creative design approaches.

- Experience with the following programming languages and packages (or similar): JavaScript (React, D3, Node, angular.js, sigma.js, p5.js), Python, R, HTML and CSS

- Experience with data visualization software tools for tabular, network and geographic data

- Experience with the following tools (or similar): Git, AWS, GCP, SQL

- Familiar with distributed data storage technologies (or similar): Spark, Hadoop, Postgres

- Experience with design tools for prototyping (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, InVision)

- Prior experience using agile methodology and tools

- Good understanding of statistics (e.g., hypothesis testing, regressions).

- Basic understanding of service design and product design

- Ability to communicate effectively and connect with colleagues, clients and partners

- Excellent leadership skills, problem resolution abilities, and good judgment
