Use your expertise to propel UKHO to the next level

The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office delivers a crucial service to those in the marine industries. Providing geospatial and hydrographic data and information, our navigational products and capabilities ensure crews remain safe time and time again. We’re now in an exciting phase of change as we strive to match our knowledge with our data-driven capabilities, and we’re therefore looking for someone who can match innovation with the need for privacy and security - and that’s where you come in.

In this fast-paced role, you will use your extensive data modelling knowledge to help us fully grasp our digital capabilities, working with technical teams to translate our products into application program interfaces, big data platforms and marine production systems. Designing the data architecture, you will carefully balance essential security with the need for access and user-friendly performance standards. You will also take into consideration emerging issues surrounding information assets such as data storage and privacy laws, while dealing with risk and vulnerability assessments. Contributing to our technology strategy, your knowledge of emerging trends and developments in the industry will ensure we remain the market leader, and your ability to mentor the team will promote a collaborative and entrepreneurial atmosphere.

To thrive in this dynamic environment, you will have extensive data modelling knowledge (including developing strategies, policies and standards), gained over a minimum 10-year period in a software engineering capacity. With a good understanding of geospatial data design, canonical modelling and prototype relational, analytical and NoSQL solutions, you will also be a TOGAF practitioner. Confident working with stakeholders at all levels, you will be passionate about sharing your knowledge with colleagues and external organisations, and your jargon-free written and verbal communication skills will prove crucial. If you have data engineering or machine learning experience, or an awareness of MoD security policies and constraints, that would be even better - but isn’t absolutely crucial. What is crucial is that you are a team-player with great data analysis and risk management skills, with the ability to see a project through from first concept to completion.

This role has the potential to transform the way we work, and the things we’re capable of in the future. So if you’re up for the unique challenge of taking on a civil service role that has a commercial slant, then get in touch today. Together, our potential is unlimited.
