We interviewed Kelly Silberstein, Support Engineer at Precisely on her experience and thoughts on women in tech.

1. What does your job role involve?

Provide remote customer software support.

 

2. What made you choose a career in technology?

At the time, it was a profession that was on the rise and promised a prosperous future, beyond the challenges of rapidly changing technology.

 

3. Did you study an IT or technology related subject at GCSE, A-Level or University?

My undergraduate degree is in Data Processing Technology.

 

4. Did you get any work experience in IT or technology before this role?

I have always worked with customer support since the beginning of my IT career (20 years).

 

5. Do you think there is a lack of females in the IT and tech sector?

Yes. I still think the vast majority are male.

 

6. Do you find there is a stereotype that a career in IT or technology is just for men?

Yes, there is a negative gender stereotype such as “girls are not good at technology”.

 

7. What would entice women to study technology-related courses?

  • Expose to role models
  • Actively recruit girls into computing courses

 

8. Are there barriers when it comes to women getting into tech?

Lack of female role models and unequal growth opportunities compared to men.

 

9. How could we encourage more women to start a career in tech?

  • Spark the interest from an early age – Family members have a huge influence on children
  • Provide through the media more female role models
  • Allow flexible working hours

 

10. What advice would you give to young women at the start of their career?

  • Don’t underestimate your capabilities
  • Take risks. Don’t fear failure
  • Don’t limit yourself to one industry or line of work
