The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) plays a vital role at the heart of UK life. The wide-ranging work we do includes safeguarding the natural environment, supporting the UK's world-leading food and farming industries, sustaining a thriving rural economy and leading the engineering of the nation's defences against natural threats and hazards. Join Defra and you will be part of a department that is responsible for the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe.

This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to spearhead the digital transformation of our department and play a key role in changing the way we interact with the environment. Through your leadership, we will digitise environmental monitoring, licensing, grants, mapping and much more, reaching the key milestones in our ambitious 25-year environment plan in the process.

Your responsibilities will be wide-ranging, making a huge impact across all our teams. While making the key decisions on digital strategy, you will also build out our software and testing teams, upgrade our digital estate and encourage cross-government tech collaboration. You will also provide vital support on a number of EU Exit projects, including Future Farming. While developing a cutting-edge, dynamic digital function, you will champion agile delivery, innovation and effective services.

We are looking for candidates with sound experience in implementing high-level change strategies and leading functions of large organisations, adopting new technologies, exploiting data assets and promoting innovation. You should also be experienced in driving continuous improvement and delivering strong outcomes against key programmes. Leadership at a senior level is key here, and you should be comfortable influencing and communicating to other senior leadership members across multiple teams and departments. Being able to develop a team's expertise and holding yourself accountable to high standards is essential, along with experience in managing commercial partnerships and suppliers.

Everyone in Defra is supported to develop their skills and capabilities. You will have access to learning and development from quality providers and support from mentors and coaches. We offer flexible working (including job shares and part-time working) alongside a range of other policies and schemes to support your physical and emotional wellbeing. Our comprehensive benefits offer includes generous annual leave, a contributory pension, staff bonuses and recognition, volunteering days, childcare vouchers and other salary sacrifice options, and an employee discount scheme.
