Two-year fixed-term appointment, with potential for extension or permanency.

Join us, and you will contribute to the development of new approaches and policies affecting millions of people across the country.

With large and wide-ranging responsibilities, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) works collaboratively to protect the environment and to maintain and grow the rural economy. Our vital work is far-reaching and complex. Plus the UK’s impending exit from the EU continues to set us absorbing challenges. With work that cannot be found anywhere else in the private sector, this career-defining opportunity offers professional development and networking in an environment where everyone is passionate about what they do.

As a Grade 6 Programme Manager, you will take ownership of a specific EU exit programme consisting of a range of complex projects. With a full remit of responsibilities from budget management to senior stakeholder relationship management, you proactively consider fresh approaches to working and devise new ways to manage and implement policies and procedures. You will develop plans and business cases, identifying and mitigating risk. Growing a strong professional network you will actively manage collaborative relationships with stakeholders with conflicting priorities, and negotiate solutions across organisational boundaries.

With experience of leading projects to agreed outcomes within time and cost, you will have a proven track record of working at pace to react to and shape fast-moving events. Ideally with an IT project management background, you should have a working knowledge of a range of project management disciplines. With an understanding of governance and procedure, you must also show the capability to deliver effective leadership and decision making in an environment of ambiguity, political sensitivity and continual change. Like our organisation, you should be continually striving to be your best, focussed on outcomes and constantly challenging yourself.

We aim to support the professional and personal wellbeing of everyone in Defra. Our benefits include generous annual leave, a contributory pension, staff bonuses and recognition, salary sacrifice benefit options, and an employee discount scheme. We also offer flexible working and a variety of learning and development opportunities.

Closing date for applications: 7 May 2018.
