Navigating an advert for a Software Management role can be a bit of a minefield. Whether its copy and pasted job descriptions or badly written sales pitches, the majority of them fail to do one simple thing...

Explain what the company are actually looking for!

So with that in mind, I wanted to go against the grain and take you on a journey...

That journey begins with a Global eCommerce Organisation in Central London who are looking to expand their development function by hiring a Software Engineering Manager. They provide an eCommerce service that operates across over 150 countries and they process millions of pounds worth of transactions per year. Simply put... they are a pretty big company. The role will specifically involve building a new team of 7-10 Software Engineers to focus on a new greenfield development within the organisation. The platform is state-of-the-art in the eCommerce space and will involve a large dose of cloud technologies (AWS) and DevOps. In other words... the progression opportunities are huge.

That journey continues with their requirements... which are pretty detailed. So rather than copying and pasting them into this job ad, I am going to strip everything back and focus on the key things that they are looking for from any prospective applicants:

* Agile Development - They are a business who are genuinely passionate about Agile and their current software engineering function operates an Agile/Scrum development methodology. Your role will involve championing and driving Agile processes throughout the team as well as focusing on DevOps and Continuous Integration.

* Stakeholder Engagement - Being a Global Organnisation means you will be expected to engage with stakeholders on a regular basis. This will involve liaising with Product Owners, Business Analysts and Directors (C-Level). Excellent communication skills are therefore absolutely crucial for this role.

* Best Practice & Coding Standards - They believe in a 'quality first' approach to software development so a big part of your role will involve driving home coding standards and best practice (SOLID, DRY etc.). You will be expected to demonstrate solid technical depth in core Object-Oriented Principles and Design Patterns. The ability to perform detailed code reviews is also important for this role.

* Technical Understanding - Despite this role being management-focused, you must be able to demonstrate excellent technical knowledge as you will be expected to liaise closely with Developers, Architects and QA over a range of technical issues. You won't be expected to code, but you should have a background in software development with a specific focus on AWS, Azure, JavaScript, Java, AngularJS, NodeJS, ReactJS, RESTful Web Services, Web API, HTML5 and SQL.

* Leadership - This one is pretty obvious but nevertheless absolutely crucial for this role. You must be able to demonstrate the required soft skills that any successful manager should have. Ultimately, you will be guiding skilled Software Engineers through some complex projects so the ability to fundamentally manage individuals is crucial.

So you are now probably thinking... 'Where does this journey end?'. Well that bit is entirely up to you.

If you want the journey to continue to a phone call with me, then give me a call on either 0191 338 7540 or 07943721308.

Alternatively, if you would prefer to send me a copy of your CV or even an inquisitive email then you can try [email protected].

However, if you would prefer to end this journey here then all I can say is thank you for reading this advert!

Anything discussed will be kept confidential.
