Core Infrastructure Services - Systems Engineers

Overview

NATS is a leading air navigation services specialist, handling approximately 2.2 million flights a year, covering the UK and eastern North Atlantic. NATS provides air traffic control from centres at Swanwick, Hampshire and Prestwick, Ayrshire. NATS also provides air traffic control services at 14 UK airports including Heathrow, Stansted, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow; at Gibraltar Airport and, in a joint venture with Ferrovial, at a number of airport towers in Spain. Building on its reputation for operational excellence and innovation, NATS also offers aerodrome, data, engineering and consultancy solutions to customers worldwide, including airports, air traffic service providers and Governments.

NATS is embarking on a major multi-year programme of work to modernise its systems and services. This includes an Infrastructure as a Service (IAAS) platform common to all Air Traffic Management (ATM) applications supporting the air traffic operation. Key components of that service include:

* a new nationwide secure network connecting ATC Operations Centres, Datacentres and Remote radar and radio outstations;

* a new flexible datacentre infrastructure to provide computing services to host the future ATM applications;

* a new common multi-use Operations Workstation and supporting secure local network that forms the core of the ATC Operator Platform for the NATS operation, with modular components providing key functions depending on customer need.

NATS requires additional Systems Engineers to join its growing service design and implementation team. Due to the challenging, dynamic environment of the delivery, all levels of experience will be considered.

Roles & Responsibilities

As a Systems Engineer you will be responsible for fulfilling the system engineering lifecycle of one or more of the infrastructure elements from requirements through to deployment into service. This role will be responsible for taking service requirements and decomposing to system components to design and build components of the infrastructure, to allow infrastructure services deployment at NATS sites. You will also be working closely with suppliers to determine the most appropriate solution.

These roles sit within a larger multi-role Core Infrastructure project team and will receive direction from the Core Infrastructure System Engineering Manager and the Principle Architect. Subject Matter Experts in datacentres infrastructure, networking, security, technical assurance, as well as other System Engineers, will be accessible to ensure that a complete, assured infrastructure service can be deployed to support the NATS ATM operation in the UK.

You will also be responsible for ensuring not only that an assured, quality technical system can be designed, tested and deployed, but also that the associated service operation capabilities are in place to enable the enduring operation of these infrastructure services once deployed. This will include service management capabilities, service desk interactions and resolver group / support arrangements.

The role also involves working with other projects within the overall NATS change programme to accommodate their new Air Traffic Management applications onto the infrastructure.

Desired Skills / Experience

* Experience in conducting System Engineering activity at all stages of the lifecycle, awareness of principles of ISO15288 System Engineering standard and industry standard lifecycle activity.

* Experience in service design and service assurance of IT Infrastructure, with particular knowledge of ITIL framework.

* Working knowledge of converged infrastructure and network architectures, in particular Cisco USC and Nexus product families.

* Understanding of security considerations and ISO:27001

* Working knowledge of Agile Methodologies such as SCRUM

* Ability to learn new tools/techniques quickly and apply to the activity.

* Strong leadership and self-motivated

* Attention to detail
