Senior Network Design Engineer

Our Client, a leading Defence and Security company, is looking to employ a Senior Network Design Engineer on an interim basis to be based in Reading. Contract is initially 6 months duration with extensions possible. You will be expected to be an expert in your field and, thus, be able to apply their knowledge to a range of network design tasks, providing individual technical contributions within a design team. This role is for an individual with expertise and experience that may be reflected in Cisco CCNP certification and/ or via a comparable, demonstrable record of data network design experience and technical responsibility.

Your responsibilities will include;
* Provide technical proposals / designs to the Network Solution Design Manager / designated technical lead on the allocated project ensuring that all activities are carried out as requested.
* Document aspects such as - but not limited to - proposed designs, rationale for design decisions and agreements reached with both internal and external parties, as required by project objectives.
* Work in a professional manner, ensuring that company processes are adhered to.
* To use his/ her own experience and initiative to suggest improvements where necessary to the design solutions and processes within the Network Design Engineering group.
* Maintain his/ her own technical knowledge and engineering methodology on both deployed and fixed communications by agreeing a training and development plan with his/ her Functional Manager.
* Ensure that all allocated work is carried out in an efficient manner and is completed to time and to budget.
* Ensure that all design and delivery documentation produced is correctly configuration controlled according to company procedures.

Key experience needed;

* Network Design qualification - preferably to degree level or equivalent engineering experience.
* Cisco training and qualification - preferably to CCNP level and/ or evidence of data network design to an equivalent level.
* Experience of network systems design and implementation for secure communications networks in commercial & military environment.
* Demonstrable success in data network design, considering solutions re cost, time and performance.
* Experience of establishing and communicating complex requirements and justification of design decisions.
* Experience of formal recording, and subsequent maintenance, of design solutions and supporting information, allowing consistency and traceability for quality processes.

Must have skills: Cisco CCNP and/ or demonstrable evidence of attaining equivalent level of experience and expertise. Data network experience of LANS & WANS with a good understanding of COTS products pertinent to data networks. Record of interpretation of network requirements and translation to design.
Desirable skills are: Experience of devices and techniques for WAN optimisation and traffic shaping. Experience of devices and techniques for assurance of network security. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentations. A good understanding of the cost/ benefit implications of design decisions. The role is expected to have some supervisory content dependent upon project demands, scale and structure. The Senior Network Design Engineer maybe required to take team leadership responsibility for up to 10 engineers so experience of managing others would be an advantage.
