The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health and disease.

We have an exciting new role available for a talented Web Developer with a particular interest in the delivery of data to users through intuitive web interfaces and a focus on design principals. The successful candidate will be working with the Centre for Genomic Pathogen Surveillance (www.pathogensurveillance.net) and the Global Pneumococcal Sequencing project (www.pneumogen.net).

The post is funded through a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation project focused on genomic analysis of Streptococcus pneumoniae, a major cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world with a particular impact in low income regions. The scientific aim of the project is to capture genomic variation in pneumococcal populations before and after widespread use of current anti-pneumococcal vaccines in order to better understand how the pathogen responds to such vital clinical interventions thereby informing strategies around their use.

Within the project, a globally distributed set of laboratories are collecting pathogen strains and generating thousands of genome sequences (at Sanger) along with substantial associated metadata (such as geographic origin, time of sample and indications of antibiotic resistance). The delivery of these data to the global research and public health community is challenging and requires intuitive web applications that both summarise global information but also allows delivery of subsets of data to allow the local laboratories to interpret with local knowledge.

The post holder will be developing applications with a focus on broad utility within genomic pathogen surveillance and data visualisation. Expertise in and a passion for UI with a focus on the distillation of large, complex datasets into intuitive generic interfaces (see for example http://microreact.org and http://wgsa.net ) is required.

Essential Skills

* Extensive experience in the delivery of intuitive web applications with a focus on middle/front-end applications.

* Evidence of proficiency in computer program design and implementation in a modern programming language (e.g. Perl, Java, Python etc.)

* Proven experience of designing and developing web based applications for support of scientific projects

* Experience of dealing with large data sets and running software on a compute farm

* Knowledge and experience of UNIX / LINUX on an advanced level

* Strong interpersonal and communication skills

* Excellent problem-solving skills

* Experience of training and supervising other team members
