Role overview:

You will be responsible for helping build our digital platform using CSS3, HTML5 and Javascript that will be the digital "shop front" for a business which now has in excess of 1.5million accounts and 850,000 customers. You’ll be a pivotal member of our online team, using technology to deliver projects that engage with our customers and help them understand and take full control of their energy usage.

Typical projects could include:

* Developing mobile first interactive experiences to help our customers better understand their energy usage and offering novel ways to save on their energy spend

* Contributing new ideas to encourage people to engage and share their experiences

* Creating engaging user interfaces

* Reducing complexity for our vast customer base by adopting a ‘user first’ methodology

Areas of specific responsibility:

* Deliver high quality, efficient, defect free code following the basic agile principals of test-driven development

* Take a very involved role in the various agile activities, including leading planning and estimating sessions and reporting progress to their assigned project lead and/or project manager

* Lead design and code reviews and be accountable for the actions taken from these sessions,

seeing them through to implementation as agreed

* Act as a scrum master for small projects, typically as part of a large project under the guidance of a Lead or Principal Software Engineer

* As a team member you will be working within a highly agile team consisting of developers, designers, UX specialists and cross platform testers across multiple sites, who are keen to deliver innovative experiences for customers.

You’ll be adept at modern front-end web development and passionate about developing clean, modular UI components that are fully functional and responsive across multiple devices.

You will understand the importance of standards across a large development team and we want you to be actively involved in contributing to and making our standards even better!

You’ll have knowledge of popular client-side technologies, in particular, HTML, Javascript and CSS/SCSS are essential, along with the capabilities to apply these and deliver maintainable, production ready code which is highly performant and works well across multiple browsers and devices.

We really value the test driven approach to developing code and look for developers who will be comfortable testing the code they produce. Experience of test driven development is desirable.

Working as part of a team and communicating with other people across the organisation is really important, so you’ll have a mix of great technology skills combined with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Essential:

* Proven experience in delivering web experiences

* HTML5 and associated API’s

* CSS and SASS pre-processor

* Javascript experience (not just jQuery)

* Responsive, Mobile first web design as an approach

* UI/UX development experience

* Website performance experience

Desirable:

* React (or other front-end MVC frameworks)

* ES6 and related ES5 compilers i.e. Babel

* Webpack, browserify (or any front end packaging frameworks)

* Grunt, Gulp

* Node, NPM

* OOCSS, BEM, SMACSS

* Javascript unit testing

* Automated testing frameworks

* Adobe Photoshop for extracting and modifying assets as required

* An eye for design and/or UX would be very advantageous.

* Knowledge and experience of automated or multi-platform testing

* A working understanding of PHP applications and PHP Frameworks (Yii, Zend, Symfony)

The role would suit a solid developer who is ready for a new challenge, and is willing to apply the correct technical solution for the required product, and all the implications of investigation, study and application this involves.
