The role

Here at the Met Office we challenge the ordinary every day, so that we can remain at the global forefront of weather and climate science. Our Technology and Information Services (TIS) business area is crucial to achieving this vision. We have been reviewing current processes within TIS, and are in the beginning stages of developing software programmes, products and content using Agile techniques. In order to complement these techniques for development, we need efficient, robust testing at each stage of the development lifecycle.

Using Agile is a new way of working for many of the testing teams at the Met Office. As Test Manager, you’ll provide a strategic perspective for both functional and technical testing teams. Managing expectations across an entire portfolio of Met Office projects, you’ll ultimately formulate a test strategy that supports Agile techniques. Alongside this, you’ll collaborate with Technical Lead Developers to explore how different products and programmes advance within the development life cycle. In this leading position, you’ll ultimately enable our testing teams to work better, smarter and more effectively, in developing the products and services that meet the ever-evolving needs of our high-profile customers.

The person

You’ll have significant experience in a position as either a Test Manager or Q&A Tester, and will also meet the below essential criteria. If you have any of the additional desirable criteria, that’s even better.

Essential

1. Degree in computer science, engineering or other strongly numerate subject or equivalent experience.

2. Demonstrable ability to translate strategic thinking into detailed operational plans and embed a culture of process improvement.

3. Evidence of good interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.

4. Proven experience of leading a testing team, setting strategy and direction for the whole team and driving a culture of continuous service improvement adapting to the needs of the business.

5. Proven ability to manage staff and demonstrate leadership, establishing milestones, team objectives and delegation of assignments.

6. Proven ability to deliver change to meet business needs and to operate over multiple projects.

7. A visionary approach to meeting the needs of customers and colleagues by setting a clear direction and constantly seeking improvements.

Desirable

1. Good understanding of the financial aspects of technical change and the ability to provide relevant input to help create sound business cases.

2. Demonstrate up-to-date knowledge of a broad range of current systems and technologies in use in the IT industry and also across industry best practice, predominantly around Agile and ITIL methodologies.
