About the role

Working on the Oxford and Grand Union Canals, you will work within a team of inspectors and engineers committed to preserving and enhancing the nation’s 200 year old canal system. You will accomplish this through our Asset Inspection Programme and applying engineering judgement to risk management.

Providing invaluable technical expertise, you’ll maintain, conserve and protect a wide range of historic and irreplaceable waterway assets across the region - everything from brick arch bridges and locks to canals and reservoirs. Your work will include inspecting structures, making recommendations on construction programmes, and providing engineering support to our many customers. Risk management and supporting the Waterway will be your focus.

About you

With a degree or a relevant qualification you have proven experience of applying engineering principles to complex engineering problems in civil engineering and are progressing toward a professional qualification. To meet this challenge, you will need a track record of safely and efficiently delivering asset inspections and complex engineering activities. A relevant professional qualification, such as IEng, is important, as is membership of a body such as ICE. You must also be comfortable contributing to multidisciplinary projects and working with GIS or mapping systems. An understanding of SAP would prove a real asset too. As the canals you will be looking after run from Oxford to Coventry and London to Leicester, travel will be required and a valid driving licence is essential.

About us

One of the UK’s biggest charities, we maintain 2,000 miles of historic canals, rivers, docks and reservoirs, along with museums, archives and the country’s third largest collection of protected historic buildings - preserving them for future generations. Our mission is to have by 2020 a thriving, sustainable waterway network cherished by a public that shares a deep sense of responsibility for its wellbeing. Achieving this will be a fascinating challenge. Come and be part of it. In addition to salary and car allowance, CRT provides holidays and pension benefits.
