The role

Here at the Met Office, we challenge the ordinary every day to optimise our capabilities and keep ourselves well-positioned at the global forefront of weather and climate science. Technology is at the core of our vision and enables us to continuously enhance our operations and deliver world-leading science to customers (who range from aviation and defence aerospace companies to the government and general public) using world-leading technology solutions. We pride ourselves on having first-rate tools and facilities in place to empower our Technology and Information Services (TIS) team to work at the cutting-edge of innovation. Within TIS, our testing teams provide essential services, including the testing of new and existing services and software, which deliver meteorological products to a wide range of customers, both internally and externally. Our testing professionals research, deliver and support the development of business solutions to meet the needs of our organisation and, most importantly, our customers.

As Senior Test Analyst, you’ll deliver professional functional and non-functional software testing services for specific projects and achieving testing milestones throughout the development lifecycle. You’ll be the technical lead on medium to large projects, setting the testing approach, planning and managing available resources, and liaising with other teams. You’ll ensure that the testing we do meets both technical standards and customer requirements across the Met Office. You’ll ensure the timely deployment of software builds to suitable test environments as well as coordinate the management, processing and reporting of defects to enable planning of defect fixes and re-testing. Collaborating with stakeholders, we’ll look to you to compose and publish supporting test documentation and provide statistics, feedback and recommendations about software quality. This is an excellent opportunity to work with teams from across the Met Office and test an incredibly varied portfolio of projects across our IT programme.

Please note that you will need to have been a resident in the UK for a minimum of two years in order to obtain the SC security clearance required for the application of this role.

The person

With a strong background in IT, you’re an experienced Tester or Developer with good people management skills. Collaboration is key to this role so you’ll need excellent communication skills. In order to be considered for the role, you’ll need to meet the following essential criteria:

1. A general understanding of the principles of non-functional testing of different layers of the infrastructure in integrated enterprise IT systems.

2. A good understanding of the principles of load testing.

3. Demonstrable evidence of having been involved with software testing either as a test analyst or as a developer.

4. A proven ability to represent your specialism to technical and non-technical business colleagues and taking responsibility for championing best practice/quality standards.

5. Provide evidence of being able to analyse a large volume of disparate/diverse technical data to distil key trends, and proactively help to determine successful outcomes.

6. Demonstrable evidence of working effectively within a team to help define team direction for a specific subject and be able to mentor junior members of the team.

If you have any of the following desirable criteria, that’s even better:

1. ISEB / ISTQB Software Testing Certification.

2. Experience of applying non-functional test techniques or security testing techniques.

3. Experience of using Load Runner test tool.

4. Experience of using security testing tools

5. Programming experience in C.
