Bioinformatics unit, Microbiology Services, Public Health England based at Colindale NW London

The post-holder will primarily be responsible for leading on the development of a web portal named PHEmGAP (microbial genome analysis platform), an exciting project to create a unified web presence for the molecular data that PHE microbiology services produces from pathogen isolates collected within England. This will include migrating existing online resources to use a more consistent set of up to date web technologies and creating a new suite of web-based tools that can handle the challenges of processing and rendering the big data arising from whole genome sequencing of pathogens.

In order to achieve this, the project will leverage high performance computing and parallel processing to analyse large data sets. This post is the more senior of two specifically assigned to the PHEmGAP project and the post holder will be expected to provide leadership in setting the technical direction of the project as well as supervision of the second post.

We are seeking applicants who are self-motivated and proactive, educated to degree level or equivalent and holding industry-recognized qualifications in web development and Unix administration. Knowledge of bioinformatics and having worked in life science would be an advantage. The post holder will have proven skill in developing a strategy for implementing web technologies for handling big data and growing the computing infrastructure to support this. The successful applicant will have demonstrable experience in using innovative database technologies other than traditional RDBMS to deliver data processing that scales to server-side web processes.

The skills required for this job will be advanced UNIX, programming in one or more languages (knowledge of Python would be an advantage), practical knowledge of both client side programming in javascript and server-side delivery of web pages with MVC frameworks and backend databases (including NoSQL). The post-holder will be expected to work independently and will have significant autonomy within his/her specialist area of expertise.

Applicants are strongly advised to use the criteria in the person specification (available online) as sub-headings in their application to make it clear how they meet each of the selection criteria.
