A Synon developer/ analyst is urgently required by a government agency in Leeds. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a company that will be migrating to .Net technology over a 2 year process. The ideal candidate will be given on the job training in this new technology and therefore makes this opportunity very attractive.
REPORTS TO:Development Manager

PURPOSE OF JOB:
To provide development of iSeries-AS/ 400 systems, maintain and update quality software solutions using a variety of development tools in line with in-house and other pertinent development standards.

ILLUSTRATIVE DIMENSIONS:
•Project based work
•Variety of development tools including Microsoft
•Changing user & business requirements

KEY RESULT AREAS:

Analyse and assist, by working closely with business and business analyst staff, with the analysis of user requirements and the identification of potential solutions to match user and business needs.

Build effective business driven systems, to defined specifications and in line with the requirements of the business.

Maintain operational functionality of the iSeries system in a live situation


Customer Orientated Development
Ensure that any development work is customer focused and not technically focused. Use one or more of the available development tools to provide a ‘best-fit' solution. Ensure the end product is thoroughly tested and documented before release.

Estimation
Through previous experience and applied techniques (e.g. function point estimation) provide accurate estimates as to specific component development time taking into account pre and post development activities as well as maintaining acceptable quality.

Quality
All work should be of the highest quality, sacrificing quality for reduced development time should never be considered at the jobholder's level.

Teamwork
Participate in team-based development, sharing knowledge and common development techniques, and mentoring other staff as required.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES AND ISSUES

The translation of user requirements into a proposed solution can be a difficult task and should not be done in isolation. Furthermore the implications of choosing a particular method of developing an application should be considered with regard to existing applications, new techniques, development tools and business needs.

KNOWLEDGE
In depth knowledge and understanding of the iSeries platform and the following specific technologies

Synon/ 2e
RPG IV/ RPGLE
CLP
DB2/ 400 (DDS & SQL including stored procedures)
General OS/ 400 operations

A depth of general knowledge of Information Technology and its uses in industry attained through a degree in a relevant subject or relevant work experience

A more detailed knowledge of software engineering fundamentals should be attained through further reading and experience, and continual personal development should be a focus of persons employed in this role.
