How to Write a Letter of Resignation

How to Write a Letter of Resignation

Even if you have an idea of how to write a letter of resignation, it's a good idea to make sure you leave with a mutual respect between you and your employer.

Once you have made the decision to move on, it serves little purpose to criticise your employer or your job. Bad feelings between you and your employer could hurt your future job opportunities and a bad reference from your last place of work could jeopardise your chances of success in a new role.

A letter of resignation is a matter of formality. As such your letter should include the date your resignation is effective from, the role you are resigning from and the date your last day will be.

It is usually best to refer to the notice period in your contract as well. It is sometimes considered good resignation etiquette to let your employer know that you have enjoyed and appreciated working for the company.

Here is an example template of a letter of resignation:

Dear XXXXXX,

It is with regret that I write to you to tender my resignation from my role as XXXXXX.

I have very much enjoyed my time with the company and the people I have worked with.

My resignation is effective from today. As per my contract, I am providing XXXXXX with four weeks notice. My last working day will be XXXXXX

I wish everyone at XXXXXX all the very best for the future.

Yours sincerely,

Your Name
