Levels of Cisco Certifications

There are three levels of Cisco certifications representing increasing levels of expertise: Associate, Professional and Expert.

The CCNA certification indicates a foundation in and apprentice knowledge of networking. CCNA certified professionals can install, configure and operate LAN, WAN and dial access services for small office, home office (SOHO) companies with fewer then 100 nodes.

Common positions for a CCNA certified individual include: Help desk engineer, Field technician

The CCNP certification indicates a person’s advanced knowledge of networking. CCNP certified professionals can install, configure and troubleshoot local and wide area networks for larger organisations with networks from 100 to 500 nodes.

Common positions for a CCNP certified individual include: Network administrator, Level 2 support engineer, Network technician, Deployment engineer

For those seeking Cisco careers, CCIE is Cisco’s highest level and most respected professional IT certification. Becoming CCIE certified is extremely difficult with only 3% of all Cisco certified professionals earning this status. In 2007 there were less then 16,000 active CCIE certifications in the world.
